cell phone unlocking

So my phone sucks ass and a friend gave me his old TMobile phone (i have AT&T/Cingular) and I guess there's a way to unlock it and add a cingular sim car and have it work. Anyone got the ability to do this? I'd rather not go through one of these eBay 'service' deals...

That's only place i was recommended to, and i heard that too. was looking for additional options... :-)
