I recently bought a 91 civic DX, 1.5 AT. I payed $50, the engine had only 15lbs of compression per cylinder.

Anyway, rebuilt the motor put it back in and the car ran great for about 4500 miles, then the transmission stopped shifting. If I started in 1st and shifted the stick to 2nd it shifted but if left in drive it won't shift on its own. I took it down to a shop and had them flush the trans. now it shifts on its own, but starts out in 2nd. and I can't get it to kick down to first.

any ideas would be a great help. I don't want to scrap the car after all the work I did on the engine.

Your first gear one way sprag has broken. The best fix is to find a used auto tranny to put in. Honda AT are very expensive to rebuild. Its a common problem on the civic trannies.

instead of putting an auto back in....how hard would it be to put in a manual? any one offer a kit?

No kits available. In 91 you would have to change the tranny, pedal assemblies, gauge cluster, shifter assembly, cut a hole in the floor for the new shifter linkage, change ECUs. Its a lot of work.
