Did you get ever tuned or not? I want to know the numbers and see the dyno if you did. I'm very curious. Also, what was your A/F like before tuning? How about after?

Yes I got tuned. There is a thread somewhere. I'll look for it.

Way to jack someone's thread, ass clown!

Good numbers... but what about the A/F ratio? What's the before & after on that? And how much power and torque were you at before tuning?

I always here people say "hp sells cars, tq wins races" and "tq is all that matters"

is HP good for anything or is it just a meaningless mathmatical number?

Horsepower is pretty overhyped and can be very misleading, but it isn't just purely marketing either. The only thing that matters is the torque curve and the gearing.

My first untuned run was 251 hp, and I don't know what the A/F or torque was. You can see the new A/F on that link.

I like how the torque and HP lines cross multiple times.

tq doesnt always win races.

take a semi for example. shitloads of tq, slow as hell.

yeah weight & gearing play a big factor

I wouldn't say all semi's are slow. I have seen a few run low 16's at truckfest at bandimere. That is pretty fast for one of them and still faster then some cars. :)

look at those wankel rotary engines too, they have no torque and are quite fast.

At what RPM do semi trucks redline?

stu
09-18-2004, 05:32 PM
Since they are diesel, I would imagine right around 3,500rpm.

im starting to think tq is just a domestic conspiracy and really isn't power :p

i know. the general census, of semis are slow.

I'm starting to think I'm going to punch you in the teeth. If anything "really isn't power", it's horsepower. It has some use, but all that really matters is torque and where it's placed. If a engine makes 400 torque and 200 hp, you know that all of the power is down low, so it's going to suck on top end. But a large part of the puzzle is gearing, so that could really change things.

David

weston, you should know that punching people in the teeth wont work. Aim for the jaw, temple or back of the head if you go for a head shot

Breadth of your torque curve (hence breadth of your hp curve) is what really matters. Torque is for burnouts, hp is for winning races.

Also torque is a force. For a car that has big low end torque, that torque makes the car fast at that instant. But if it doesn't have the revs to properly apply the torque, then its worthless. That's why high revving cars have shorter gears than lower revving cars. If you take two cars of equal power, but one redlines at 8 grand, and the other at 6, the low revving car will generally have more torque thus it doesn't need the multiplication from the gears, and it needs longer gears so that you don't waste time shifting. The higher revving car will have shorter gearing to compensate for its lack of torque, and since it has a higher redline it has more effective revolutions before you have to shift, thus, you spend about the same amount of time in each gear. Now assuming both cars have equal drivers and weight, then they will both be equally fast despite the torque disparity.

Torque is the force applied to the wheels. Horsepower is the rate at which torque is applied. Both are important.
