View Full Version : Me vs. Ford Lightning

Going home friday night down I-25 when I pass a Red Ford Lightning. Looks like a young guy & 2 girls driving and as I pass he immediately jumps on it. I never realized how loud the SC's are on those suckers, jesus! The exhaust sounded like it was pretty damn free flowing due to how loud it was, drownded out everything including the thoughts in my head. But anyhow, it definately looked pretty quick so he goes by me (I was just cruising, didn't gun it when he did) and I pulled right behind him. Since the lane he was on was wide open I figured he'd gun it, but he didn't, so he gave me like a intial domestic flyby. So I get in the right lane which was clear and got right up to his passenger window when I hear him stomp it again. So this time I stomped the gas and was already about 4k in the rpm band and immediately just pull in front of him and continue pulling steadily. I put about 5 car lengths on him and was pulling till about 110 where I let off. I definately digged the sound of the truck, sounded mean as hell. And that was definately a fast truck 'burnout: Was a pretty good little highway run from ~55.

No way in hell you pulled a s/c lightning. Must've been a F-150 with some stickers.

umm his car is quick, i wouldn't put it past it to beat a lightning on the top end. the whole 6spd vs auto thing probably helps a bit

Not to diss here, but I work for Nissan and have driven several 350Z's...they won't beat a Lightning from a roll or a stop. But it could have been another idiot with stickers, thats not too uncommon these days.

i think instead of puting "type r" or "si" stickers on their cars they should downgrade so that when people race them they feel kinda embarassed that they didnt win or didnt win by so much. im gonna go rip off my EX emblem and get hondas "value package" badge from the new 2004 lineup.
Justins car isn't even close to stock though.

ok and i've driven a few z's as well as a few lightnings, but Juztin's car isn't exactly stock, and its definately not slow. At least not from a roll

Whats he got done? Most stock Z's are only good for mid 15's at this elevation.

I was expecting to get pulled as well, but I was suprised to say the least. I know what a lightning looks like and I wish I could say he wasn't stomping it. I miss the sound of the v8 like that, sounded wicked. I've got a few mods like cams, headers, pulleys, no cats, true dual exhaust, plenum, intake, and now a cracked exhaust.

Nice mods! What do you run at Bandi?

Sounds nice, and with that set up you would have some serious top end. Have you ran it at Bandimere, i've seen a Stillen s/c'd one up there running high 13's low 14's.
He should run mid to high 14s. Bone stock Lightnings run 14.9s.

I havent run it at bandi. Sooner or later I will get around to that :) . I've run against a 13.9 STI and kept even... from a roll though :) I've raced a stock STI from a 5mph roll and was dead even till I started to slightly pull at the very top end. But I bounced off the rev limiter a bit on 4th and he missed 5th so I can't really say for sure that I pulled; we both had driver error :) . I've got to fix a few things on my car like the exhaust and intake first and ideally I'd like to get a nismo LSD to help with launches.
I know of two Z guys running ~415 wheel on the ATI kits in colorado, but they've never run @ Bandi. One's black and one's le mans. The black one's in Denver, and the other is in FC. Both are running the 9psi pulley, so (~7 psi here)I never heard of the boulder guys breaking into the 12's with the Stillen'd Z. They did a custom billet 12 psi pulley on that thing. I figure by the average gains with that kit, it should of been over 400 wheel, but I havent asked them about it since they built their TT monster. ~620hp & 660tq wheel. They blew their clutch though, but i think they ran like a mid 12 second pass before it gave. Not sure. Apparently tho they can't get it to hook up.

Sounds about right. I hit a 14.5@97 when I had my 350z a year and a half ago at the track. That was with Intake and Exhaust and on the stock, crappy 235 Potenzas. I put on some Nitto 555 255s in the back but never did get a chance to take it back to the track. You're probably hittin' low 14s.

The Nitto's are awsome treads. I have those on 20x10 rears & 19x8 fronts. With that wheel set, the car hugs corners like a dream and has bogs of grip. I got some Pilot sport A/S's on the stock beater 17" wheels and I think they're just about as easy to break traction with as the stock potenza's whether it be a straight or a turn. But the small wheels are so fun in the rain, easy to break traction but predictable enough to control without worry.

Yeah. Last T&T is October 5th and I'd rather avoid that one.
