So, I have two options here that I'd like to do.

First option is an all Infinity setup. It would include Infinity References (front), Infinity Kappa 63.5i (rear), Infinity 7520a Amp, Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.

Second option is a mutt. It would include unknown (in front), Infinity Kappa 63.5i (rear), Alpine 700w/350rms Amp, Alpine Type-S 10.

fitchnpolo - do you know of any Kappa speakers that are 1 7/8" deep?

Thanks guys.

I vote neither.

FWIW, I have inifiniti kappas in my car, and I despise them. WAY too bright for my tastes. If I had the option, I'd go with boston acoustics for the satellites & whatever trips your trigger for subs.

I planned on BA, but I had to purchase all the replacement gear on a specific day (got a deal from a friend who was leaving soundtrack & he offered me his discount), and BA was out of stock in all of the Denver retail stores. The BAs are SOOOOOO smooth, whereas the kappas sound nearly as harsh as the early aluminum dome tweeters used in mb quart seperates.

Have you auditioned them all side by side, with your music, with everything set flat?

Boston Acoustics are bad ass.

IF you are gonna choose between the 2 you listed, I'd take the infinity's.

Mario

I haven't heard the Boston Acoustics, but I have been more than pleased with the Infinity Kappa's... I can see what you mean when you say bright, but most the music I listen too is basically just that.

Do yourself a favor and listen to BAs. If for nothing else to compare the kappas to a REALLY SMOOTH SET OF DRIVERS. :D :D

Maybe it's just that my ears are so old & abused, but nothing sounds better (consumer grade stuff) than BA's silk dome tweets.

AFAIK, soundtrack carries BA.

Infinitys bright? Bah. Try MB Quart.

Kappas are good speakers. You will like them. They last a long time as well.

Why the hell are you putting the nicer speakers in the back of the car? Rear speakers are rear fill. In a good SQ setup, you barely hear them.

Between the two I voted infinity, but I think you should listen to some MB Quart separates. They are bright, but the clarity is astounding.

I have a perfect 10. Put yours in a sealed box and get the most from its design parameters. Tight bass is much nicer than really really loud bass.

saabracr -- the biggest I can fit are 1 7/8" deep up front. :(

Is it because of the plastic backing? You can cut those out, that's what I did with mine.

I did that ^ as well in my DA.

It hit the window when it was rolled down.

saabracr
08-29-2004, 01:52 PM
Don't roll the window down.

Can you shim the speaker to fit farther from the window?

MB Quarts aren't very deep either.

Mario
08-29-2004, 01:53 PM
Well, I have to be able to roll the window down... :smashfrea

Let me check on a local forum and make sure I'm not smoking somethin.

While the quarts are obnoxious, I find the kappas to be nearly as bright. And nearly as painful at volume.

And ditto on the bass comment - tight is SO MUCH NICER than loud. A nice combo is good, but control it. I've got a single jl 10w3 DVC in a sealed box and with only 200 watts (soundstream 6.0), and it's perfect for my car/setup/music.

For sure, I am definitely going for the quality of the sound rather than the dB's...

did he ever get his setup?

Mario
05-17-2005, 04:04 PM
Haha I ended up drifting to an Alpine setup since some of it came with the car... I have an Alpine MP3/XM Headunit, Alpine Type R components,Alpine 350w RMS/700w Max amp, and a cracked Sony Xplode sub.. it's ghetto, but most of it was cheap/free upgrades from friends so I can't complain. :)

Zach

the type rs are sick though, i was just curious. if you need new stuff though, i can get the hook up from infinity, like 70% off retail i think

...and a cracked Sony Xplode sub...

Nice setup besides that. A cracked Sony speaker is just as good as a new one IMO :p

Edit: Wow, I just checked out your website and just by reading the front page it sounds like you are going to go serial killer on us :guns:

how do you like the alpine components mario?

Mario
05-18-2005, 07:48 AM
They sound great IMO, but I am not a very big audio person... if it sounds somewhat crisp then I think it sounds good. You're more than welcome to listen to them if you want sometime. :)

I have the CD9831 HU and it does the job for me and the stock speakers are doing alright but I'm planning to do a set of Bostons front and rear. I have a Bazooka 250w pushing a MTX 10" sub and it serves my purposes just right. Not even close to a competiton sound but it does have enough "thump" to annoy people. ;)
Anything off of Metallica's ".....And Justice For All" sounds sweet.

i carry alot of Alpine at my store. There equipment is very well built compared to alot stuff out there. Alpine has a setup called the 1k system took best sound quality at the 2005 CES show. Two sets of 6 1/2's off deck power and 1 ten with m350 mono amp every thing was type s. They were up against Boston, Infinty, ADS, etc. Alpine is the way to go

were there competitors running speakers off the deck also? cuz if that were the case than it would not be a good comparison of the true performance of the speakers.

We used alpine for our inexpensive SQ cars, Image Dynamics if you had money! Infinity's are just as good as Alpines. It all depends on what your music tastes are, how much you can spend and what other parts you get like EQ's and Crossovers. Also make sure you get an amp that is fit to those speakers. If they are 2 ohm speakers dont get a 4 ohm amp. You can get a2 ohm, 1 ohm or a 1/2 ohm and I can still get 1/4 ohm. Those are more for the subs though! I would get whatever you want most. If you get a EQ you can tone down the highs or mind or whatever freq. is too high/low. A X-over will help that too. If you want a good setup get the Infinity speakers, subs, a good deck, good amps, Audio Control EQ and X-over. You should be able to get all that for $1500 to $1800.

There are only like 6-8 manufactures of car audio speakers/subs out there. The Rockford Corp. (http://www.rockfordcorp.com/home/) makes like 5-6 different ones like MB-Quart, Lightning Audio, Rockford Fosgate and more. The funny thing is the make some for MTX as well. MTX makes some of Fosgates. Audiobahn, Digital Audio, MA Audio are the same, Audiobahn puts screens around their magnets, and D.A. like red. Cerwin-Vega makes their own. I am pretty sure Image Dynamincs makes their own, MTX makes many, and there are a few others. I think infinity and alpine are made by MTX or Pioneer, so you will pretty much be getting the same thing. As I put it and many people in the industry put it.... a speaker is a speaker, it's all the other parts that make them sound good and hit hard. Look at Alma Gates, she has gone from company to company and still sets records. So if you all are going to put 1k in to it get what you want and can aford as well as set it up right.

We had what we called the Car Toys Special. It cost $250 and repaired all the mistakes they made.... like an electrical tape ground or 10 awg wire on a 2000 watt amp maybe a 40 amp fuse in the 2000 watt amp that is always popping. Some shops do shit like that if you are trying to save so they can get you back in there to spend money. I am willing to bet most of you can do all this yourselves so I'm not too worried. I put well over 50k in to stereo equipment over the last 10 years. I now only have at most 4k in the car now. It slams hard and sounds like I'm right there hearing it live. It's all Audiobahn, US Amps, AudioControl and a Pioneer deck, nothing special, nothing new and all high tech, just works.

dude, you dont know what the hell your talking about. none of thoes manufacturers make any of their own shit nor do they make shit for anyone else.
i happen to be personal friends with the man who builds lightning audio and eclipse. the very same guy who was building my subs for my business.
