So, like the title says, when I brake I hear a clanking type sound, I inspected the rotors, they look fine, the pads appear to be ok externally. --- I checked the torque of the lug nuts ... I pulled on my camber kit and sway bars and control arms and didn't find anything apparently loose.
Any ideas?
I think its loose fitting rim/hub/lug connections. Its a real creaky clanky sound .... it goes: glak, glak, glak, glak on braking only, if I lift brakes instantly the sound goes away. Sometimes at the end of the braking the final sound is more profound. I really CANNOT feel the claking, it does not make the body shake or the braking sketchy, in fact braking seems perfect, just loud as fuck from that back corner....
So, Im stumped. Is it just a shitty rim/lug contact? or the caliper pins need cleaning or? .... wtf? Im so stumped.
BungySTI these are your old rims, ever have any creaks on them?
One last thing, when I re-torqued them down it appears to make the noise happen easier on braking ...so... I am assuming they may have been over torqued by hand last time they were bolted up thereby causing a shitty seat for them at proper torque loads?

Hey Tai,
I've never had any problems with the wheels. This sounds more like a caliper issue. Bust out the socket wrench and check the tightness of your brake components(esp. caliper bolts, caliper pins). You might even want to try reseating the pads.
The sound is only on braking and not when you take off? I've had problems with clanking noises on take off which I traced down to a lower control arm bolt being loose.

Quickie.... the caliper bolts are the rear two bolts (12mm) holding it together ... and the pins are slid down the width of the caliper behind that bolt hole correct?
What specifically do I look for, dirt on/in/around the pins? The bolts are tight as shit cause I tried to undo them the other day with NO success. Maybe they are over torqued and making that nasty noise on deceleration.

That sounds about right. If the bolts are tight, that's probably not the culprit then.
Are you using the hub rings?

yes, im using some other metal hub rings from my rotas. They fit perfectly an were totally flush....
Should I check the pins still?
I really think its the rim seating wrong ... its a metal clak/creak BUT not a screetch or squeek by any means.

put on your other set of wheels and see if it goes away. if it does you know where the problem is

It wouldnt hurt to try a different set of wheels.
But your quote below leads me to think it's pad related. You have slotted discs?

I would still check the caliper pins just to be safe. Even if they're tight, that doesn't mean that one of them didn't semi-freeze up.

So today after driving I've discovered a few things, I can get the sound doing slow hard right turns over any sort of uneven surface ... I think its the sway bar. Almost positive.
I would throw my other wheels on but they dont have tires mounted... so ... maybe I can swap wheels with my wifes car for a day.
Im almost positive its suspension related.
I do have slotted fronts but not rears...

How will I know if a pin is frozen up?
