View Full Version : What can be wrong? (exhaust fumes in car)

So i had the S2000 out today and it was raining so i had the windows up and the vent on to get fresh air in. Well all i could smell was exahust fumes. At first i thought it was the dodge durango in front of me, so i switched lanes but it would no go away.

WHen the rain stopped i had the windows down and i could smell a strong stench of exhaust fumes.

When i started the car this morning i though the exhaust (stock) sounded louder than normal. I didn't think anything of it at first because i haven't driven the car in a month, but i now think that maybe a certain section of the exhaust lost a bolt.

what else could it be? I don't see any missing bolts, but i am going to wait for it to cool down a bit before attempting to tighten them. I've had a aftermarket exhaust on before and removed the stock studs and bolts. Could one of the bolts have backed out? Would a small leak like that get up and into the intake of the vents?

Any help is appreciated.

When is Tobi going to be back?

Thanks,

Check the header and where the cat begins. Usually if there's a leak there, it'll creep into the ventilation's intake.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me.

You mean the two sets of bolts circled in red?

Now I should tighten these after it has cooled down, correct?

I'd check ever nut and bolt that has something to do with the exhaust, from the header to the muffler.

but do it when it's cool right?

O2 sensor could leak some fumes as well, right?

i have something of the kind with exhaust - i can definitely smell fumes under the hood when i just start a cold engine. it goes away in a moment, and it never gets into the cabin.

Simon, what's this application you made screen-short from? looks curious to me.

:smashfrea  ;Slap: ;UgH:

Well i can't belive what i did. Last time i drove it i checked the oil after i was done. So i topped it off and FORGOT TO PUT THE OIL CAP BACK ON!

Oil was sprayed under the hood, but not too bad. When i smelled in the valve cover it was the exact smell i was smelling on the way home.

hehe, i wasn't gonig to easily believe that S2000 could have some exhaust defect even if it hasn't been driven for a month ;)

I don't believe you. You+the S2000+rain, it just dosent add up. I have to see pics of you driving it in the rain. And if you want to feel better, at least you didn't do what I did. Well now we can smack each other!

For some reason i read about people forgetting to put back on the oil cap on the S2000 board all the time. Mine was wedged near the battery.

actually, its a problem with most honda owners... when you are hung like a donkey your penis requires so much blood flow that sometimes you can briefly loose circulation to the brain.
