I noticed at least two or more threads exist constantly on the board, where we're about to make some roadtrip or just cruise in the mountains. And people mention walkie-talkies. And i was thinking, maybe we should get CB radios for us? This could be some real fun! i used to have a CB radio, but i sold it, because i had nobody to talk to, and somehow i didn't have anything to say on the trucker's channel :) i don't think they're way expencive, i got mine on sale for $50 both the receiver and antenna. maybe somebody has ideas where to get them as a group buy with discounts?

We could get two ways, motorola has some nice ones. We just cant be broadcasting things like "Hung and Justin just did 150 past that farm truck and made it swerve into some house!" you know, stuff that's incriminating. Hell we were all jacking around one night on the way to wings and we were like "if this POS saturn would move out of the damn way" and then some voice was like "I'll shove this saturn up your ass, then some girl started saying something about candyman" Weird that they were on the same channel.

cb radios help out a lot. ask truck drivers for cop reports, weather up ahead, etc......

we usually use the frs radios, they are cheap and you don't have to have any big antennas or anything

it would be cool to have something for the caravan down to the springs
maybe we could just buy something to try out for that drive, and return it when we get back

FRS is shit. CB > FRS by about a million. 40 channels + sideband channels and it goes a hell of a lot further. I still have a pretty good 5-watt handheld CB from about 10 years ago (CBs were big in my neighborhood when I was a kid). Should work great for road trips... just stay off of channel 9 (that's the emergency channel). It wouldn't be good to broadcast our activities straight to the State Patrol.

the one i had was about 12-15". it was on a magnet base, you don't have to keep it on your car all the time, just put it on during cruise and take it away after.

You could always get a handheld model. :)

^Sweet, Weston u know how much those guys run?
Only other thing I could think of is getting like a 2mi radius decent walkie talkie or something that all of us that like going on crusies can just pick up the same model each or something...

The 2 mile range walkie talkies are what FRS is... 2 miles is a best case scenario. I've found them to be pretty crappy for cruises. CBs go a lot further... much more transmission power and bigger antennas.
As for CBs, I was going to say Radio Shack, but I just looked and their selection isn't what it once was. That's ok... their prices have always been inflated anyway.
WalMart sells CBs too, but I can't seem to find any handheld units on their site. Looks like they have a car unit for $34.96 though: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?cat=3947&dept=3944&product_id=2606837&path=0%3A3944%3A3947%3A4510
If you get one of those, you'd need to get an antenna for it too, but you wont really have to mount it on the car... I would just lay the antenna down across the dashboard or back window. And there's no need to mount the radio either... just set it on the dash or passenger seat and power it from the cigarette lighter. I'd still prefer a handheld model, but those seem to be harder to come by. I'm sure they're a little more expensive too. You could always check eBay or a truck stop though...

I found this handheld unit... http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ProductDisplay/s-10101/storeId-10101/p-7562/c-10101/catalogId-10101
$49... Not too bad considering that the best FRS radios that go for twice that and are still inferior.

I have a cobra 40 channel with weather radio that I might let go of. I kind of wanted to keep it just in case, but I might be persuaded.

the only time when you don't need it, is when you're going with somebody on a passenger seat ;) it's not about speed, Alex, it's to communicate with everybody in a caravan. it's fun, and it's also directions, in case someone got lost along the way.
I've got an FRS that plugs into the car that is supposed to go for 3 miles, probably not though. I've also got a CB but I broke the antenna like the first day I had it. :)

I have a cobra25 40 channel with antenna I'll let go for 75.00
if anyone is interested only used it for 3 months than I got a cobra 29 and boosted (turbed) it to 7 watts FCC regs only allows 4 watts transmission on
ALL radios sold but as we know what are rules for to be broken. I do know allot about cb,s as I have been a truck driver for almost 30 years. one note on the hand held radios, you can burn them up if pluged into the lighter and used for to long any ?'s pm me

I have like five motorola two-ways with a 2 mile radius.. I already keep two in my car (for those nights when you just have to party train) and i have to dig the rest up.. (I thikn I really have more like ten but some are at my aunts house...) I'll dig em up and see how many batteries I need and if any car doesn't have one I'll loan it out for the cruise....

basically, i guess everyone can get whichever CB unit he or she likes. the problem is interoperability. i'm not really familiar with those small 2way radios. are they also operating on CB frequencies? if yes, then somebody will prefer them, and as long as we agree on one frequency, we can use people with CBs as relay stations to those who use small radios. guys, correct me here, i'm really not sure if it can work this way.
anyway, i think we pretty much agree that this is going to be cool to have CB communication. once i start going to mountain cruises again with you (read: once i'm done upgrading my suspension ;) ) i'm gonna get a small CB unit for me as well.

CB and FRS radios are not compatible... CB channels are in the 26-27 MHz range, while FRS is in the 460's.

so the majority on the board votes for CB? I think this is reasonable. if somebody only has FRS, they can give one of a pair of radios to somebody with CB unit and get all information from those guys. we'll have tree system with CB nodes and FRS points, hehe. like FIDO ;)
