from 9news.com:

COMMERCE CITY - Police in Commerce City believe they've caught two people responsible for stealing up to $1 million in cars, trailers, power tools and other personal property.

Many of the items could belong to Denver Metro area victims.

Police arrested Ronald Walters, 58, and Gwen Riggs, 39, both of 8700 Ulster St. in Commerce City. The suspects were released pending charges.

Walters admits to serving five years in prison for auto theft.

He claims he bought all of the items.

"I've got receipts for all this," he said.

A Commerce City Police officer stumbled on the items while investigating a stolen car report.

While conducting his investigation at High Plains Truck and Trailer Repair, Detective Al Hutton noticed many items missing their VIN and serial numbers.

Commerce City Police are planning to have a public viewing of the impounded items.

Anyone who believes they could be the rightful owner of the property should contact CCPD.

That story is more than a little exaggerated. I have actually met Ron and have been down there a few times, because a friend of mine used to work for him. He seems like a nice enough guy. The $1 million figure is complete bullshit. The place is literally a junk yard, and the guy lives in a small trailer in the middle of it. There is no way that he has anywhere close to $1 million worth of property. Most of what's out there are junked cars from Klode or Copart that they repair and sell. My friend used to help with this part, and he says that he has never seen an altered or missing VIN down there, Ron seems to have titles for everything, and you can still see the salvage yard markings on most of the cars. So, I'm sure they are legit, especially considering the fact that nobody with would steal such vehicles.

This actually went down about 2 weeks now. If the cops really had much of a case against the guy, they wouldn't have released him pending charges, let alone not have any charges after 2 weeks.

I think there is a little truth to the story though... there are a bunch of hobo-looking guys working and living down there, and most of them seem pretty shady. I wouldn't be surprised if they were up to shit, but it would be petty.

I think the cops just stumbled upon a suspicious situation, jumped to conclusions, and exaggerated quite a bit. That seems to be police nature, and I can't say that I blame them. I'm sure it looked pretty suspicious with all of those hobos running around there, and it couldn't have helped that Ron didn't have the paperwork for most of the vehicles immediately available to the police.
