What are some of the most important engine/exhaust modifications I can do to my civic that will give me the most horsepower gains (without boosting)? For example: Full catback exhaust? 'burnout:

obviously, your best bet for power gains would be speed holes.
You see speed holes work best at high speeds where the air is compressed at up to 30 psi where it is then directed straight into your intake giving you power like no other mod. Expect anywhere from 200 to 300 whp.

I put some speed holezzzzzzzzz on my trunk, and I couldn't beilive the difference, sure I lost HP from removing my spoiler but not only did I lose some heavy trunk material, but I also got the "speed hole effect"

Not a lot really, unless you are suffering from a very restrictive intake/exhaust system, I/H/E will only make a small incremental difference. Anything that does not change your effective compression can only do so much, so short of higher compression pistons, expect small gains, and it's easier to boost it than to replace the pistons (Of course boosting it, if not done right, can lead to piston replacement also!).
Also remember that changing your I/H/E also changes your effective valve overlap, so you might want to get adjustable cam gears and schedule some dyno time to adjust them for your new I/H/E. This can also improve your throtle response.
You might want to look at your drive train to make some performance gains, removing rotating mass and increasing mechanical advantage will get you faster without increasing HP. Smaller. lighter wheels/tires and a lighter flywheel can make a noticeable difference (Smaller/lighter wheels actually shows up as a significant HP gain on a Dynojet.). Removing unnecessary stuff from the car (passenger seats, air conditioning, cruise control, power steering, etc.) can also help.

Does motor swap count as a engine modification.
Get a B18C.
I have H/I/E, and you dont really get anything MAYBE 20 hp at the wheels for a N/A car.
NAWWWWS is cheap speed but its a good idea you have I/H/E + fuel managment before you do that. or run like a 50 shot.

I take it you're referring only to bolt-ons rather than doing an all-motor build up.

Make sure to add lots of revzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz to that. But how many of us would daily drive one, other than an RC car? ;)

daily drive it? hell no, hahahaha :D
as someone said earlier, i think weight reduction is where the largest gains will be had.

.Boost the thing and then add bolt on parts. Then you will notice more power. With a n/a setup you will see very small gains. With forced induction you will see decent gains with bolt ons.Look at it this way.
Intake maybe 150 to 200 or more.Mine was 400.
Headers 400 to 500 for a good one.I dont have headers so no worries there.
Catback 400 to 500 hundred for a good one.Mine was 350.
So youre looking at about 1200 and you will probably gain maybe 10 to 15 horses at the wheels. Not bad.But look at it this way.
Spend about 2500 or less if you find a good deal and you can boost the car.
With the car boosted you should be able to increase the horsepower output of the car by at least 60 horses at the wheels. Now its not so hard to see which is the best bang for the buck. Also once the car is boosted you can buy the intake and catback.Which will set you back another say 700.But now you will probably make about 20 horses at the wheels with just these two mods. You wont need headers because the turbo kit comes with new headers that the turbo bolts onto.
So for 1200 you can make 10 to 15 horses extra
or for 3200 you can make about an extra 100 horses.
It all depends on what your plans for the car are.And most importantly what you can afford.

NAAAwwwwsss if you wan dirt cheap HP gains for seconds at a time...
Turbo if you want those gains all of the time. . .
And a couple throusand to spend?? Hell, turbo it! That runs ~$1000 or less if you DIY it. . .
Here is a calculator I wrote a while back to figure out the Nitrous jet sizes to HP gains:
http://www.robietherobot.com/NitrousJetCalculator.htm
I even wrote a Palm version for track days:

I would use your head with a b18c bottom end and use Civic R cams, with adjustable cam gears. Use Type R pistons. Then do the I/H/E. After that put a small shot on it. You would be smoking quite a few turbo cars on the street.

double gasket the intake gaskets and dont use a head gasket ..... thats a little trick all gm owners hold dear.
well, im a lil new here but the replys really sucked besides maybe one or two. My advice to posters is you got nothing good to say then dont' say it. Everyone is here to learn and not everyone has the money to buy a B18C or a turbo or whatever. Here are your alternatives. Intake, header, catback exhaust. might give you 15hp if your lucky. Next thing would be get new cams or cam. That ill increase hp quite nicely, however it will make your car idle badly, which means you will have to get some kind of fuel air controller....such as the s-afc.(quite a bit of change there) Another thing would be to have the heads exhaust and intake ports ported and polished. I believe they call it a 3 valve angle job?? someone correct me if im wrong. All of this work is quite expensive. The cams/cam might run you around 200 a piece, plus i think you would need new (titanium) valve springs so there is no valve float, the port and polish maybe around 400-500.....but with an I/H/E.....the angle job, the cams and valve springs you might realize 30-45 hp gain.....for an NA motor

If you'd actually like to go all motor here at altitude, I'd definately say to bypass little things such as intake, exhaust, headers, and go for the more noticeable gains such as uping the compression, boring, stroking, wilder cams, and some head & valve work. Just get the really big & expensive stuff outta the way, then do the little bolt-ons to squeeze out some more juice with some re-tuning to compensate the inherent rich condition from driving a mile up. Just my .02
Murp, it's very clear that you have no idea what you are talking about. I particularly like how you start out your post by saying that not everyone can afford a turbo, then you immediately start talking about wild cams that cost $200 each, 3 angle valve jobs, port and polishing the head, titanium valve trains, and how all that stuff is expensive. I guarantee that I could put together a turbo kit that would whoop ass on the set-up you are describing for the same amount of money as the set-up you are talking about.

Get rid of your wipers.
Get rid of your window washing unit.
Take out your A/C.
Take out your power steering.
Take out all your seats except for your driver seat.
Get a smaller battery.
carbon fiber the bitch.
Get lighter wheels.
Remove your antenna.
blah blah blah, strip your whole car. It's more about HP/weight ratio. It's really cheap to strip your car too....it's like...free lol.
