For anyone interested, there is a RallyCross this Sunday, May 16th at Watkins Motorsports Park. You can run in just about any vehicle, and there are loaner helmets available if you don't have one. You will most likely be fine running in your street car as long as it's not lowered too much, because this is the smoothest course we run on all year. We usually get 6-8 runs a piece(compared to 3 runs at an SCCA autocross), so you get some time to drive your car sideways in the dirt. If you don't want to drive, come on out anyway and you can ride with any of the drivers. Everyone is always happy to give rides to spectators. If you've never done anything like this before and are a motorsports fan, you should definately come out. I promise you will have a blast.

Here is the information for the event.

Hello Everyone,

Rally Cross Event #7 will be held this Sunday 05/16/2004 at Watkins
Motorsports Park 6 minutes east of E-470 on Jewell

This is the smoothest course we run all year with few to no rocks. This is
the first event of the year in the Denver Area so here is your chance to
have fun on the dirt without a long drive from home for the locals.
Preregistering is reccomended but not required.

Entry fee is $25 for SCCA members and $30 for non members who are encouraged
to participate.

Participants normally get three runs in one direction and then three runs on
the reverse course after lunch. All times are added together for a final
score. Events end between 2-4 pm on average.

Please contact me if you need further information about the event or
classing.

There's a conflict! There's a "Smoothie" meet on that day too. I'm gonna have to pick that one since it's closer.

I'm doing the Rally Cross then if it is done in time go to the Smoothie place. Sounds good after a day of dirt racing.

Dude . . . I did my first rallycross this weekend down at PMI (Pueblo) yesterday. I had to get up at 4:30 am to get there on time from Boulder in a semi-blizzard, but it was STILL worth it!!!

Crazy fun - it's a real life driving video game - spinning tires, bouncing off the rev limit, throwing dirt everywhere, pulling the e-brake, drifting through 180 degree dirt sweepers, etc. Totally kicks ass! 6 runs for $25, each run well over a minute, which as a long-time autocrosser, represents a huge value in terms of seat time vs. dollar.

Here's the 2005 summer schedule - note the DENVER events -

What's cool about rallycross is that all you really need to run (and have an awesome time) is a car at full ride height, preferably stock springs, a working E-brake (if your car is FWD) and a set of snow tires in good shape. I'm looking to buy some used Kuhmo or Falken rally-specific tires already, but you don't need them just to try it out once. We ran Yokohama studless snow tires at 45 psi to minimize the chance of knocking a tire right off the bead/rim, and the Civic did fine, even with a less than ideal suspension setup (too stiff/too short Skunk coilover sleeves dialed for maximum ride height. In fact, I managed to finish 3rd out of 9 cars - most of the others on real dirt tires - in Group 2 class. My co-driver finished 5th, about 4 seconds back in the cumulative time logs (all six runs get added together for your placing/ranking).

I hit at least two cones on one run too (which adds 2 seconds each to your time, just like autocross). Results aren't up yet on the rallycross website, but I'm itching to know if I might have finished 2nd at my first rallycross event if I hadn't hit those two cones . . .

Anyone who is interested in rallycross, feel free to PM me about my experience. Seriously, this way cool and possibly the most fun I've had behind the wheel in a long time - and I've done drag racing, autocross, track days @ Second Creek, go-carting, etc.

And some pics of ME beating the fucking snot out of the EGbeater . . . poor car! Nothing broke though, with 12 punishing runs through the rutted out course. Fuck yeah EG power! ;wor;

Note the dude in black in the foreground shooting pics - that's Rupert Berrington, SCCA Sportscar magazine contributing photographer. There will be a Rallycross article in the June 2005 issue, and I'm HOPING I make cut for some national exposure!

It's a lotta fun man. Use a beater. Borrow your neighbor's pick-up truck for the day and tell him you're helping someone move. Use a rental car. Doesn't matter what it is, if it's RWD, cool; if it's FWD, just use the e-brake. If its AWD, you're in like Flynn.

Here's a link to a whole lotta pics I shot -

Sorry, can't - helping a buddy swap a motor on Sat., going up snowboarding for only the 2nd time this season on Sunday . . . traffic on I-70 better be NON-EXISTENT at 6 am on the 27th!

I'll be at the next ones in Denver though - hopefully in my Miata at full ride height, or in a somewhat rally-prepped VW Golf . . .
