Alright I was driving with AV630 and one of his friends... they took off and I couldnt keep up I was WAY behind... I am sure there is something wrong with my car and I need someone to check it out... Once my car cools down imma check turbo for shaft play... Another thing strange is that when I hit about 4 or 5k rpm the car makes a loud squeeling sound... I dont know what this is but me and AV herd it...
Tobi is there anyway you could try to figure out whats wrong so that I can start saving up some cash to get it fixed...
I'm jobless right now and broke...
Whats a easy way to check for a blown headgasket... My car got pretty close to the H today under heavy driving on a hot day(not sure if this is normal)... I also do hear water moving around sometimes...

Really, you should never hit Hot... even if it's a warm day, it was only about 80*f here.

Best way to check if a HG is blown is to do an oil change. If there's a milky residue in the oil, that's coolant, and that's a bad HG. Your problem could be anything from a HG to a thermostat, to a loose belt (the squeal), to a going water pump. I'll take a look at it on Fri.

well which one of av630's friends was this? if it was terry, i am not at all surprised you got way behind, that just means you should have bought a faster car :)
and do what skaterkid said, also check the condition of all your belts and make sure they're tight.

Loud squeel above 4k while trying to boost = IBblownturbo.

Blown turbo?? SHIT!!
It boosts fine... still boosts at 4k...
What do I have to spend to fix it... Should I just send it to turbonetics and get it rebuilt? or have you look at it to fix it?

I'm not saying it's blown but it is a possibility. Loud squeeling noises aren't good, especially while boosting. Does it do any bucking while under boost?

its not a blown turbo because it even does it while im in nuetural... My turbo wont spool in nuteral... I really need someone to look at it and tell me what is so I can figure out whats its gonna cost.

Why doesn't your turbo spool in nuetral? Is your turbo hooked up to the tranny or something? Your not giving it enough gas if it's not spooling, because the turbo uses exhaust gases to spool, which are not gear dependant. I'd go with skaterkid on this one. I don't know how the water pump is set up (off the chain, or off the serp. belt), but if your getting a squeal, and overheating, it's the easiest thing to check.

Most turbos won't boost in neutral, they are load dependant, not exhaust gas dependant.

Uhh, as far as I know it doesn't matter whether I am at 4,000 RPM's in nuetral or in gear, it should still be the same no...? I don't get how a mechanical thing such as a turbo can be load dependent...?
Try this on any car with a turbo. There is a big difference in both the amount, and the heat of exhaust gases at 4000 rpm with zero load, than there is at 4000 rpm moving the weight of the car. Think of the difference between the sound of an intake at 4000 rpm in neutral and under load. Under which circumstances do you think the motor requires more air? Doens't it just make sense that since there is more going in, that there will be more going out?

What I'm saying is, if you rev it long and hard enough, usually to redline, it will spool. Haven't you ever hear someone at a stop light working thier blow off valve.

True, you may not get full boost on all applications, but the turbo will begin to spool.

Yes, but the BOV is hooked up to a vacuum source and will open when the throttle is slammed shut regardless whether or not the turbo is creating positive manifold pressure or not. The point is that YES, it is normal for his turbo to not boost in neutral.

sorry stew, but I have to disagree just a little... a small turbo will still build a very small amount of boost in nuetral... my little greddy unit will bump the boost gauge up very slightly if I rev the living shit out of it. And my Turbo XS BOV has a spring to keep it closed under vacuum only. It takes a combination of vacuum and boost to pull the piston to the open position, and it will blow enough air out when reved in neutral that you can feel it. I think your theory on load is correct, but I think you also see higher pressure under load because you have alonger period of time at lower RPM to build boost. Also, to much load will not allow the turbo to build much pressure. You have to have RPM to get boost also. Long pulls in high gear won't allow enough exaust gas at lower rpm to build boost. The turbo keeps trying, and the waste gate never opens, so all those super hot exaust gasses have to go through the turbo. This builds up a lot of heat, and can burn exaust valve's pretty damn quick (did that on my old subaru...TWICE...VERY expensive...hey, I was 17, it was 1992, and there were very few resources for turbo info... stupid teenager :) )
I can hear my turbo spool in neutral. Nothing compared to when it's under load, but it spools.

Some spool and some dont. But none of them are making tons of boost with no load. Some are even computer controlled not to in nuetral.
Kwando, my bro (in law) is a service writer there.
Mario, you have a few things to learn about turbos.

Just to clarify, your reasoning for thinking you have a problem with your car is because you lost a race? Thats not exactly the greatest diagnostics.
You have a relatively rare vehicle, so I suggest getting on some dedicated message boards and find some locals that you can get together with and absorb some of the in's and out's of those cars.

Shit something has been wrong with my car since it rolled off the factory lines 14 years ago. lol

I'm not really familiar with your car, but if you get a loud squealing sound under high boost it sounds like a pre-turbo exhaust leak. On a WRX there is a 95% chance this would be an uppipe leak.

Whats the easyest way to figure out where the leak is? Not just because i lost the race... BEFORE i thought something might be wrong because boost guage only reads 4 psi and that squeel made me nervous...
I was thinking that the psi was because of altitude but now im not so sure... I should have not fallen back 6 cars in a race between 2 cars that almost have same 1/4 time.

Just think of it this way, on my car with an open intake, when I rev to 4000 in neutral, it is quiet and sounds very mechanical. When you floor it going 45 in 5th, it creates a LOUD low pitched fluttering noise, indicating it is under load, and taking in more air, and pushing more air out.

It's perfectly normal for a mkiii supra to boost 4psi at this altitude. Almost every stock supra i've seen boosts to 4psi at this elevation.
