Can somone explain the difference between i-VTEC and the original VTEC

i think the i-vtec system has the ability to kick in at variable RPM ranges, depending on conditions.

The i in i VTEC means that the computer can vary the cam timing (retard, advance) on the fly over a certain range. Think of it as a computer controlling adjustable cam gears.

so how much more effective is this over the original vtec?

It does both, It can activate VTEC and deactivate it at varying load conditions. It can also advance cam timing for better flow at higher RPMs.
Old VTEC has a set rpm that it comes on. The new style can shut off at high rpm under cruise conditions for better fuel economy. It also optimizes airflow in the manifold with the adjustable cam timing.

iVtec helps to level off the power curve. Adjustable cam gears let you move the powerband around to suit your preference, occassionally making a few more hp than you would otherwise.
iVtec is continually adjusting cam postion in relation to the cam gear, so an automaticly adjusting cam gear, more or less. So instead of tuning for just one position, the computer can adjust the cam and make the powerband as wide as possible. Max hp won't change much over just Vtec, but the "area under the curve", so to speak, is greater.
Better tractibility, better overall torque, etc.
