what can i expect from a busted timing belt. i am fixing a car for some guy who broke the timing belt on his 92 eclipse going down the highway. i am going to replace the belt and see if everything runs ok. has anywone broken and a timing belt and not hurt anything else in the engine?

The valves are probably bent, If that is all thats wrong with it you will be lucky. Ive seen them break teh vavles off and kill all the engine internals and turbos before.

Dont even waste your time just doing the timing belt. Just go ahead and pull the head and replace the bent valves.

when i broke mine nothing happened. the engine was somehow perfectly fine as if it everything stopped turning imediately after the belt broke. it was a Mitsubishi engine too. i dont know though...everyone else i know has either broken or at least bent valves.

My friend broke his t-belt and his valves were fine. His engine stopped immediately too tho.

majority of timing belt problems are an easy fix. at my shop i see many cars that have unfortunately busted a timing belt and the only problem is the car is dead. valves do bend, but just remove your head assess the situation, replace the belt and get rippin.

Ever heard of a leakdown test? A much better diagnosis tool than "just pull the head" IMNSHO

Well..first you have to tear apart the block..and replace the piston rings you fried...you'll be lucky if you didnt blow the welds on the intake!

Last time I lost a timing belt..this big plate went flying off the floorboard of my car too..and you call yourself a GHANDI... :Peace:

Since no one else in this thread has really fucked with mitsu's I'll tell you.

UNLESS you've won the powerball lottery 3 times or you're a fucking magician, I bet you DO have some bent valves if that thing was at any rpm above idle. Do a compression test and that'll almost tell you if you do or don't have something else wrong.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

Yeah, Ive seen the valves in those heads--->>they are huge,be hard not to bang a couple if the timing changed so drastically.especially since it's an interference engine too...

Isn't it kind of hard to compression test without a belt?Maybe remove the cams?I'd rather do the leakdown, like GHANDI says..
Good luck with that !!

If you bend valves it depends on if its an interferance engine or not.

Damn you ghandi.

It would be at least a week or so before I could do it. Is this the same car that was driving down the highway when it snapped? Or is this car still running?

I would think you'd be jumping at the chance to have a watching/being your tool grabbing monkey

Haha. NORMALLY I don't like people to watch me but I just up the price a little for such instances, lol. I'm sure a few of you know what i'm talkin about.
