If you are still searching for hours on Kazaa or WinMX to find your songs you are doing it wrong. Sometimes it can be tricky to find a good version of what you want, or you have to wait in line...well there is a better way..

New trend in downloading music is ripping from streams. There are so many great radio stations on the internet why not just get the music from them? You have a huge selection, don't have to wait, and don't even need to be there... Be nice if you could have a program that would just sit there and steal from those streams... well someone did just that.

http://www.ratajik.com/stationripper/

You tell it what stations you want to get music from, and it will rip all the songs that are played on it. It will also name and tag the .mp3s correctly. You don't even have to be there. No searching involved. Just pick your stations and let it do it's work overnight.

Some concerns people have:

What about the crappy quality?
Don't stream from crappy stations. It's not to hard to find stations with >128 bitrate with music you like. 128 isn't the best, but for most people it's just fine. If there is a song you really want you can always try getting it the old way

All they'll have is pop and crap -
Not really... there are so many stations online, most if it is the non pop stuff that people like. There are tons of stations to fit everyone's tastes. Old school hip hop, rap, techno, korean and everything else. Just find the good stations.

What if I want a certain song -
If there is one song you really want it can be either easy or hard to get. If the song is popular and played on the stations, then let it stream overnight. Chances are you will get htat song along with a lot of others you enjoy.

That's kind of the nice thing about it... the stuff played is stuff that people like. Not everyone likes everything but chances are you can find a station that plays a lot of the music you like. So while it might be harder to get one specific song, it's so much easier to get a bunch of ones you want.

It works great, I am streaming from 7 different stations right now. Already got tons of songs.

It's really nice because you always hear that song in the car or someplace and think "i should download that" but then forget to or forget the name or whatever. Now you can get it without having to think about it. Yea you might have some stuff you don't want in there with it, but you can get rid of that easy.

Ok, so now that everyone has been informed, lets use this thread to post some good stations. Post what kind of music they have, the bitrate and other info (like if the songs are censored or not)

I get music from newsgroups. I never post my requests, just grab whatever is out there and keep those that I like and delete those I dont like.

_Extreme Frequenzy_ X-FREQ BACK FOR GOOD!! High Quality!! XFREQCom - has good rap/hip hop. It's 128 bitrate and not censored. They have all the stuff they play now, like Chingy, Kanye, J-kwon.

Mellesleg Rádió - RapSoulR&BHip-Hop (192 kbit) - uncencored rap. Missy, outkast, sean paul, good stuff, nice quality

Gusradio - good selection and quality, but censored. Still a good stream though.

UIUC's Hip Hop Radio - more underground stuff, well, underground stuff from more mainstream artists, some good stuff from jayz & em (uncensored)

This is great because it's so much less work. Don't really have to search for things... just let them come to you.

it's not 100% perfect. Sometimes that happens if you are downloading from more streams than you should. These stations tend to repeat after a while, so chances are you'll get it on hte next try.

Yeah, but I'm a perfectionist and like to burn entire albums... possible?

I almost cried when Audio Galaxy went under. They had all the impossible to find indie stuff.

You can usually stream a bands newest album from their web site.

With this setup you can capture any stream onto mp3s. So if you do find that you can take advantage of it and rip them with this program.

You just need to go into your file types screen and make an association.
