View Full Version : Attn: Dustin! Is this track legal?
Hey Dustin, since I need to have a cut-off switch for my car, and I don't want to cut up any body panels, I thought that this idea would not only be easier, but better serve my purposes as far as a sleeper is concerned.
I want to essentially make one "L" bracket, and attach that to the car, then have another capital "J" bracket and have the switch mounted on that bracket. In the drawing you can see where the joint would be. When I'm not at the track I would un bolt the two brackets at the joint, and rebolt them together so the switch mounted bracket would fold up underneath the car perpendicular to the "L" braket, parrallel to the trunk. Do you see any problems with this as far as being track legal? I mean I know I will be clowned for it, and people will think I'm being ghetto, but I don't care. In fact, I'll just remind them of the Nova that had a tubed rear axel without wide tires. :)

Oh yes, and for those who are curious, I plan to weld a little box around the back side of the switch to keep it somewhat protected from the elements. I'll also weld sides onto the steel barcket for added strength, I may even go as far as welding three sides on instead of two, so it encloses the cables completly.

Just mount it behind your license plate. Thats how I did mine.

Stu, I have seen several cars up there with temp switch mounts. They usually have them stowed in the trunk. Then on race day they take them out and shut the trunk lid on them to pinch the switch assy in place.
I'm worried about the trunk pinching the cables and shorting out the system.
I'm sure that it needs to be solidly mounted in order to be NHRA legal.
What about the guys who just toss it out of their trunk? Are you saying that this idea wouldn't be solid enough, or it would be okay? I'm a little worried about that.

The switch is the mounted to a steel plate like in your picture but is made to clamp between the trunk and body. Your cables are in no danger of your trunk damaging them unless you leave them in the trunk for a long time.

Doesn't matter what it runs. If it has a trunk mounted battery, it must have a battery cut off switch.

i think the point is why put the battery in the trunk?

If the battery is relocated anywhere but the stock location it must have a cutoff.

What if you just move it over to the other side of the engine bay? Damn NHRA anyway! :p

But that still doesn't mean you should move the battery on a 16 second car

LOL, battery relocation on a 16 second car. It doesnt get any ricier than that.

Does this apply to batteries that are smaller in size than the stock battery? I hope not....
Relocating the battery gives the car better balance, but that's not why I did it, because I don't really road race. *sigh* I'm not sure how many times I've told you guys, or how often people ask me if I'm done yet; but just as a reminder, I'm turbocharging my car, and I moved the battery to the trunk because it was in the way of the particular set-up I chose. Will it be okay with guys to have a 14 second car with the battery in the trunk? I don't want to suffer the guilt of having other people think I'm a jackass or anything, so I just want to know now so I can brace myself for any emotions I may have to feel in the near future.

Smaller battery in the stock location is ok.
Done worry stu, there is a support group for people like us. Slow cars with a bunch of unneeded mods to make us look like real racers.

My 18 second Talon has a trunk mounted battery also.
