So remember I was bitching about my IE awhile back? Well, I was in the middle of moving so I didn't get around to fixing it, just got the PC up and running at the new house this weekend, I was on here last night, getting ready to read the thread about possible fixes and my window explorer dumped me. Gave me an error message and said it needed to close down. Now it won't let me open anything. I can bootup and get to my desktop, I can even connect to my ISP, but I can't open any windows... my Window Explorer error window comes up every time... and it dumps me back to the desktop.

Any suggestions? Or is time to take this POS to the pros?

Thanks!
-Wade

What OS and what error message?

It's XP... and the error message just said it had to close, then it asks if you want to send the message to MSN or whatever. I looked at the content of the report but it's gibberish to me. I'll try to look at it again tonight with more specifics, but it didn't really say too much that I can remember.

when you get to the desktop, hit ctrl-alt-del, then click on "task manager." Then click on file, click on "new task", then type in "explorer" without quotes and press enter. See if that helps. If not, maybe run a system restore if "last known good configuration" menu option doesn't work when you press F8 during bootup.

try opening up "My Computer" and right click at the top bar and click on address. Vwalla, IE

That's not going to fix any of his problems.

Ryn chkdsk and disk defragmenter first. If that doesn't work, may have to reinstall a Windows XP layer (still retains files, just replaces all system files and registry).

Try firefox or netscape 7.1 instead of IE. I know it's not a fix, but windows is scary regarding IE, outlook, email, etc.

Wade, if you want to drop your computer off, I can take a look at it.

It doesn't matter what kind of replacements for browsers guys - he said he can't open any windows. That means he's got more of a system problem then just an IE problem.

That wont help unless he's got an ERD or a good backup of the registry.

It'll work enough for him to grab any documents he needs so he can do a full reinstall... just IMO, but that seems to be the best. Once something like that happens, system never really goes back to full stability (like it ever had any to begin with :p )

ERD was windows NT 4.0. This is XP, don't need nor is there any way to create an ERD natively in XP. XP also automatically backs up the registry in "restore points", something 2000 didn't have.

Thanks for the help guys.

I did a system restore from a point about a month back then ran adaware and spybot... unbelieveable the amount of shit that came up. So I back on for now. I need to get some new anti-virus software, I let my last one expire a few months ago.

Thanks again!
