Well, I have an English paper to write in the next week or two... needs to have a thesis and and be argumentive... I was thinking about choosing a topic such as the Microsoft Anti-Trust case, or doing a comparison between open source and closed source software. The idea here is to just weight your side a little more, but provide pros and cons for each side. If anyone has any recommendations for a more specific topic, any information (links would be great), etc. I'd definitely appreciate it.

I don't smoke, but I don't support smoking bans.
Many cities in Colorado have joined cities across America in banning smoking in restaurants and bars. Support for banning smoking began following research which linked second-hand smoke with cancer. I'm still not convinced that second-hand smoke is harmful. I was part of an experiment on second-hand smoke and cancer.
From birth until I turned 21, I lived in a household with two parents who smoked. And smoked a lot. My parents smoked when my brother and sisters and I were in the car, even with the windows rolled up during the winter. My parents smoked while we all watched TV. Following that 21 year experiment, I did not get cancer from all the second-hand smoke I was exposed to. And neither did my brother or sisters.
This leads me to the latest anti-smoking craze. The city council in Santa Monica, California passed an ordinance this week which could ban smoking in a new place. A second vote is required in two weeks on an ordinance that would ban smoking....are you ready? ON THE BEACH! This is another act by the anti-smoking Nazis who have found meaning in life through a crusade to ban smoking everywhere.
If second-hand smoke is an issue, the constant wind on Santa Monica beach would make it impossible for anyone to actually become exposed. If the issue is litter, then why is there no ban on soft drinks or fast food?
Stop the madness! We have more important problems than banning smoking outdoors. But then again, it's Santa Monica, California. They don't have many problems!
Newman......
I hate cigarette smoke. Cigarettes killed my mother and all my grandparents. I find that many (but not all) smokers are extremely rude because they set forests ablaze and stink up rooms. I have to pay for some of their illnesses through increased insurance rates and government programs that use my tax money. Many smokers think the whole world is their ashtray, as evidenced by any intersection with a traffic light or stop sign.
But I don't know about a city banning smoking on the beach. I mean, I kind of like the idea because I would hate it if I was at the beach and someone started clogging my lungs with their cigarette smoke, but I would be mad if I smoked and couldn't go to the beach to enjoy my nasty addiction. This is quite the conundrum.
Just like in some restaurants, how about making parts of the beach for smokers and parts for non-smokers? That seems reasonable. But in the end, this country is governed by majority rule, and if the majority says no smoking on the beach, then that's that.

High school.
How long does it have to be? I think it'd be hard to do in under five pages.
