My Internet Explorer keeps locking up on me. When I pull up the task manager, it says not responding and it never comes back. I always have to end task and open it up again.
WTF? Just started happening about a month ago... any quick tips for things to check?

spyware, adware, virus? all the above...almost guarantee one of them is the culprit.

Mozilla is good stuff. But i hear it is not as secure as IE (since most online shops use IE)

I had some really bad spyware/virus on my computer a while back... it was horrible... ate up all my resources, sent information to all kinds of people and crashed my computer all the time... I finally got rid of it... (if you haven't guessed yet it was windows) :)

Dial up. I know it's not my IP, my Outlook runs fine.
I tried removing it and uninstalling it, reinstalling it and it's still no good. I'll check for adware and spyware, most likely have some somewhere.
Maybe I'll get an updated virus scanner too and see what hits.
What's good these days? I've always used Norton.

Is world of warcraft out yet? Game looks like its gonna rock my socks off.
Mozilla has a bunch of add-ons that you can download, one of them is called "launchy" and allows you to right click on any link, and choose which program to open the link in, i.e. Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, new tab, etc. It's really useful.

It hit public beta last week..so normally that means we'll see it in another 4-6 months or so...depending on how the testing goes. Looks like a badass game. :)

Rock on, Stu. It's nice to see that at least SOMEONE has good sense...
Firebird has evolved into firefox. Get it [url=http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/]here[/url. It's small, FAST and very full featured.

here is something that will get rid of adware and spyware for sure.It will require some of your time but its all well worth it.If you have any important information I suggest you back it up on cdr's or rw.Then just format your hard drive which basically reinstalls windows and destroys everything else.Including all the unwanted crap. After that install only the programs you know you can trust.Stay away from file sharing programs as most of them are spyware or adware themselves.Programs such as I mesh,Morpheus,KAZAA and the list goes on .The added benefit is also the fact that your machine will run much faster than before.Ive done all of this and it worked like a charm.Running a firewall will also help you out a whole lot.

Formatting your drive re-installs windows? I dont really think this is the best solution for a lot of people..

I meant reinstall windows. If youve done it then you know that once you recover your system back to its factory specs the process also formats the hard drive before it reinstalls everything.Dont make a comment unless youve done it before and you know what the hell you are talking about.

Wow...are you really that ignorant? Talk about someone that obviously doesnt know what the hell they are talking about...you should check your own skills out ace.
Windows will NOT format your drive unless you tell it to do so..there are many other options. Installing windows by itself will NOT return your computer to "factory specs" either..unless you own a freaking dell or something with a "recovery disk." For most users..it would return you to a state where you had to install all of your drivers again, lost ALL of your data, had to re-install ALL of your programs...
I guess you figured me out..I dont know anything about computers!

Does anyone here use Ad-Aware? It's amazing the crap I pick up after a week's worth of browsing. www.answersthatwork.com has a task list that's pretty good for figuring out what all the processes are that are running on your machine. Spybot S&D is good too, but I like AdAware better. I've been using the Google toolbar to kill popups and I like it too. Between AdAware, Spybot S&D, Symantec Enterprise A/V, and checking my tasklist against answersthatwork, my machine runs pretty clean. I only have to reload Windows a couple of times/year. That's so sad.

You sound like doing this proces once makes you a computer guru.... Mike does know what he is talking about. As might you, but you aren't doing a very good job of explaining it to the rest of us.
From what I can gather you are saying you should reformat your disk, then reinstall windows.
That would get rid of the spy-ware, but it would also get rid of everything else on the system. People who aren't that computer savy wouldn't want to attempt this on their own, as they could have some major problems trying to do things afterwards like get their email and install all their software and drivers.
Most people should do this process every once in a while as it does really increase the performance of a windows machine. I think a lot of computer savy people will reinstall windows once to twice a year just to keep a clean system.
Of course the other solution is to install linux, in which case you don't have to worry about doing that at all :)

Yes you are correct. You also have to reinstall all the other programs as well.Which is usually on a recovery cd that comes with your pc.Once again it all depends on the brand of pc that you bought.Every manufacturer does things differently.Ohh and DrJones what makes you think ive only done this once.We all know what happens when you assume things. Also with your post you just proved that I was right.
And bedlam you call me ignorant because I didnt get into the specifics of everything.Seriously though Ohh God of PC's try not to be too arrogant.Lighten up .Or at least get laid.Maybe you should lay off the coffe or something. And everyone else that ohh so loves bedlam get of his cock already.

If you have to use a "recovery CD" to install your O/S..you really dont know much about the process. What if I have a DSP version of windows? I'm sure you have heard of an overlay install?
I work at a computer store ok..we get people in all day and all night..they WANT to save their data...and the hacks at Best Buy and CompUSA wont do anything to help their problems. The default solution is just what you suggested.."format and re-install." Sure..that will work, most of the time, but what if the problems dont go away after that? You say that you should backup your data before the process..which makes sense..but if you only have one PC in your house, how are you going to back up..say....160 gigs of mp3s?
I was just messing around with you in the first post..but it just seems like you really dont know the subject that well..and what you are recommending is really not the right thing to do. He is having problems with IE..do you seriously think thats enuf of an issue to format his drive? What sort of experience do you have anyway? I imagine you also have a Dell, Gateway, Compaq or the like?
I dont want to be a complete jerk here..but I dont really like people giving bad advice like that either..its like telling someone who has never buffed a car before..to use some really heavy abrasive..and a huge rotary buffer on their first attempt...
Ah well..

You know, you sound like a complete fucking idiot when you talk about computers? Whats this recovery cd you speak of, oh wait I had one of those once, 6 years ago when I had a dell. Formatting windows to fix ie doesn't exactly seem like a good idea to me. I didn't exactly see anyone call you ignorant, but if they did I can see where it would come from. I really wish people who don't know what they are talking about would just stfu.

I wouldn't mind having a list of the forums you subscribe to. Most of the ones I subscribe to are much worse than this, especially car-related forums. The really good ones I see tend to be very heavily moderated.

I use that solution myself, but I don't mind relaoding all my drivers and applications and restoring my application data. For a typical user I think your suggestion is dangerous. If a typical user like my wife were to try your suggestion, it would be a disaster. There are some setups, like my old Sony laptop, where a recovery disk can restore OS and applications, but not everyone has such a setup. To present reformatting the hard drive as a solution for browser problems is irresponsible in my opinion. I'd think you should at least include a strong disclaimer with that solution.
Less drastic actions would include some type of spyware/adware killer like Adaware (my favorite) or Spybot S&D (both free for personal use). For more technical users, task manager and the www.answersthatwork.com task list are a good start.

Thanks guys!
I have way too much shit on my PC to reformat it... knowing my luck I would lose all my pirated software. ;) It's a system I built myself and the recovery disks I made are outdated... if I made disks now I would have the same problems still... right?
I barely know enough about PCs to put one together and get it running, and I usually have to take it in to get the initial bugs worked out... but I still find it to be cost effective for the options I want.
It doesn't really bother me right now, but when I move into the new house next week, my girlfriend will be using this PC and trying to explain to her how to bring up the task manager and end a task would be like explaining the finer points of string theory to her 4 year old son. :D

sounds like a good soulution.Funny you mention Sony's because that what I own.I have a VAIO Laptop and a VAIO desktop. So for me its quite easy to do what I was suggesting. But I can understand where a newbie that can barely turn the computer on and barely knows how to use the thing would fuck some serious shit up if they tried my solution.Ohh well.To each his own.
Disclaimer***Attention all HAI members. My solution may be too drastic for some.If you know what the hell you are doing then go ahead and try it.If you have little to no computer skills then I suggest you try rmc daniels ideas or bedlams.

If you get really desperate..just drop it off at my store, we'll get it fixed up for you..no data loss involved. Its not always the cheap way to go..but sometimes its just better to leave things to people who are experts. If its mostly pirated stuff..well your data really isnt worth THAT much anyway. :)

Either that or write zeros to drive, format disk and begin windows installation.
Writing zeros to a disk is sooooooo fun. :ring:
