how many of you are using a notebook only? like you don't own a desktop pc.
right now i need a laptop, and my desktop is somewhat dated (700mhz if i remember right, 20gig, etc) so i've been thinking about just switching over to a notebook. i get a small discount with dell from my company, and i like the fact i can finance a system through them. the notebook i put together would pretty much kick the shit out of my desktop now so i'm thinking about picking it up and just using it 24/7.
i guess what i'm asking is if there are any negative sides of doing this?
right now i can't see any so i think i'm going to go ahead and order it tomorrow.
for anyone who cares it's the 15" inspiron 1100.
-2.4ghz P4
-384mb of ram
-30gig hd
-cd burner/dvd player, XP, office, 94whr battery, case, 64mb usb key, blah blah blah haha.

Im using mostly a laptop. It's a desktop replacement kind though, meaning it's fast and big but also heavy and has no battery life and also loud. I'm not a gamer so that's not a problem for me, although I brought it to a LAN party a few times and it did fine.

IMO, if you have the cash to fork out, you can get a pretty f-in fast notebook. For example: price out a notebook that has an XP 2500+, 1GB RAM, 64/128MB Video card, and a 40-80GB HD... it would be at least twice, if not 4 times what I built my desktop for.
I think that, if I were to ever buy a notebook... it'd be an Apple Powerbook G4. Take that sucker, load SuSE on it, and have a pretty sweet mobile machine.

Notebooks are really, really, far away from being desktop replacements. The screens are small, they are really expensive, the powerful ones rip thru batteries like they dont even exist...how "portable" is a notebook when you have to plug the fucking thing in after an hour of use? I dont get peoples facination with them myself..I get to play with really fast desktops and notebooks all day long..and even the most BADASS notebooks wouldnt put a candle to my desktop system. Besides that..you are talking about a HDD that is really prone to failure (and normally like 4200 rpm :( ), LCD & battery issues, and more things that I can really name. If you are a serious computer user, and need the portability..you really need both...its as simple as that.

-Bedlamagree with most of that. but if you like taking your computer to work and home then thats a big benefit. plus if you arent happy with the size of the monitor plug it into a real one. i used a laptop only for about 3 years. after 2 i wished i had customed my own desktop but i was into gaming and such. for the money laptops arent as good a value. + they arent really that upgradeable. but if you have the money they are nice. its also nice to be able to bring it to any room of your house and browse the web while watching tv or whatever. i used mine to hook into my home theater alot for parties whatever. never ever run out of songs that way!
