View Full Version : Argh! Tried to go do emissions today...

I went to the emissions station in Longmont this afternoon. First they complained because I have aftermarket wheels and their restraints "tend to damage them". I told them that they rims are already messed up and I wouldn't hold them responsible, so they went ahead and ran the car. Well, they start the test and the car is pulling left and right all over the place, and at one point the guy about jumped the thing off of their dyno. So they stop the test and give me a paper that says they're unable to test the car because it is "unstable". They tried telling me that my alignment is off, but that's bullshit. I told them this and asked what I'm supposed to do, since the car is fine. They say bring it back and they'll try it again. I look forward to wasting another 30 minutes because they can't handle it...

Some places won't even run it with low profile tires.

They're 205/50-15... Not really low profile like most people have. The sidewall height is the same as 195/55-15, which is a stock size.

Put your stock suspension back on. BTW thanks for posting your shit here, in the apex forum and probably at 10 other brain forums. :o

i was wondering, is there any legal way to actually get a sticker that says "Colorado emissions exempt vehicle" or something like that? new cars have them.

holy shit dude, i had this exact same thing happen to me with my old civic.
the civic was bone stock too. actually the first time i went the dude had no problem, it's just the car didn't pass. well i come back like two days later to get it re-tested and the same shit happens, the guy says he can't test it because "something is wrong" with my car. i explain to him there were no problems two days earlier, he walks away. so i come back the next day so i can try someone else. of course i check tire pressure and all that. same thing!! so i'm like "fuck it" i take it to a guy i used to work with at subaru who hooks me up with an alignment, everything is fine he says. i have him print out all the info and shit and he signs it saying the car is fine, etc, etc.
i take it back one more time and of course i get the guy from day two testing it again, of course he fails it and tells me i need an alignment at which point i show him the papers saying the car is fine, he get's the manager. manager comes out, we go over everything that's happened, he says sorry, but there is nothing he can do!!
fuck that. about two hours later i had the jetta haha.

The emissions excemption only applies to the first owner of the car and it only lasts 5 years. If you get collectors plates, you don't need emissions, but the car has to be at least 25 years old.

WTF do you care? And it's not because of my suspension.

I'm going to go put trash in your dumpster, jackass!

Damn. If it comes to that, I'm going to raise hell over it. They can't just fail me because they can't handle the car. It's an emissions test, not a can-a-retarded-monkey-drive-it test...

Yeah it is, just accept it.

And please come to my apt with some trash. I need some more burning material to heat the poor little kitties that hang around the dumpster.

BTW which one am I, hahahaha.

Go to the emissions facility by the airport in Boulder. They've always been cool with me, and when they had a prob with my old rims they just did the pre-1984 test on my car.

The car doesn't dart left and right when going on a smooth road, and it doesn't do it on PFI's dyno (unless it's not lined up correctly), therefore something is up with the emissions place.

And I know which twin you are, Randall.

Thanks for the info. I'll be going there tomorrow...

I used to hate emissions. Just get it done in Wyoming and you never have to deal with that problem again. :)

Yeah, I've been having the thought of buying a shack in Weld county (no emissions) and registering my vehicles there. They'll both pass emissions, but there's too much bullshit to go through to get it tested. They failed my Prelude the first time because the gas cap didn't seal completely; it passed the emissions part with flying colors both times, and the damn thing was burning oil!

since when do cars have to be strapped down on a dyno machine? My father in law does emmisions and all he has to do is stick the tester into the exhaust

Weston, you might be able to get away with just a P.O. Box.

As for testing it again, I say take it to another place. Same thing happened to me a long time ago. I just took the car to another place and it was swaying side to side as well but not enough for them to freak out and not finish the test.

Is this just a Denver thing? cuz i've never seen them here in the Springs.

You strap a car to a dyno, not an emissions tester.

When I took my car the lip was about a millimeter off the ground. Every time they'd shift it would make everyone snap their neck, one hillbilly walked over and tried to figure out what was making the sound, it was funny! I thought I had failed because my car was on for a whole 2 minutes, and when they pulled it off I noticed on the screen "check engine light". I was like FUCK! Then they told me it passed and on my way back to work my check engine light popped back on, freaked me out though.

Actually, now that I think about it some more... the time it jerked around like that at PFI was because it wasn't centered, not because it wasn't strapped down well. The kids working at the emissions station just hot rodded the thing through there and made no effort to center it, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened. Even the people standing next to me were commenting on how fast they drove my car through the bay.

....The kids working at the emissions station.....
actually that is something that scares the hell out of me every time i'm passing emissions - the fact that most of the times it's just some young jerks who take your car to test. somehow i don't trust them

Weston
03-03-2004, 01:06 AM
Yeah, they made it pretty obvious that they can't be trusted... They hot rodded the thing on the way in, stuck it on the dyno without centering it (nobody could while going that fast for all of 20 feet), jumped it part of the way off the dyno during the test, continued the test but couldn't control it very well (repeated overcorrecting), aborted the test claiming that the vehicle was "unstable", and then hot rodded it even more on the way out. The people standing next to me commented that it was pretty ridiculous, so you can imagine how I felt as the guy who owns it, just put all kinds of money into it, and finally got everything how I want it.

I would of gave those idiots a helluva ass chewing for one, and two I would of argued for a free emissions test next time around for such obvious neglegence :)

Envirotest uses chassis dynos for testing, in order to put a load on the engine.

I went to the Boulder emissions station today. They treated my car nicely, took the extra few seconds to center it, and it had no problems whatsoever. It stayed in place fine for the entire test. Yesterday at the Longmont station, they couldn't even do the 30 mph portion because it was jerking around, and then they about launched it off of their machine. Maybe I should call in a complaint...
