my 98 jetta comes with the Bose premium sound system, and for stock speakers it doesn't sound bad at all, so i dont think its worth replacing any of those speakers right?

second, im looking at some subs...i dont listen to a lot of rap or techno, mostly punk rock and stuff so i dunno if i want too much. anyways i looked at 2 r-f 12s that sounded ok, but i found a pair of diamond audio 12s for less...i have never heard of diamond audio before does anyone know if those are better than the fosgates?

third...how to hook up the subs. i can hook up a basic system, but mine is a pain in the ass. i have a factory amp that you have to work around. the guys at circuit city didn't even know how to wire it into the headunit i put in. so i dunno if i need another amp or where to hook it up to etc.

SO if any of you could be of any help or have any other suggestions that would be great...thank yoou :)

I think 2 12"s is overkill for punk music but it's up to you.

As far as hooking up the subs, you're going to have to get an outboard amp for them. What deck do you have? If you have an aftermarket with spare pre-amp outputs, you can use those to signal the amp and will need to run a wire for remote(turns on/off the amp). The amp's power will have to come directly from the battery. There should be some grounding spots in the trunk to ground the amp, as well. It'd be best to get a hold of a service manual to find out where.

So then are you going to jsut be using the stock deck? I'd have to look at it to get an idea because we installed the system on my friends 98 jetta too but he was using a different dekc.....so that's going to be different.

All you need is a single 12.

I've got a single jl 10w3 10" dvc being fed 200 watts into 2 ohms. It's more than sufficient, IMNSHO. Esp if you aren't listening to bass-heavy stuff. Even Crystal Method "Legion of Boom" rocks pretty hard from the single 10.

My cheapo Crossfire 10" did pretty well in the GSR. I listen to techno and occassional rap and alternative. It also has alot to do with the type of enclosure. I have a ported box, which has it's advantages, volume-wise.

2 12's is over kill. I would just get a single 10 for punk.

i dont have a stock deck...its an aiwa thats a year old...doesn't play cds anymore and the volume dial works half the time. i understand that 2 12s is overkill...but knowing my cheap habits i'll keep the same shit if/when i get a different car which should be sooon...i'll have these subs for a long time so i might as well overkill instead of haivng to spend more later if i ever want to.....yeah my reasoning makes no sense whatsoever, but maybe you'll get the idea hehe

BUT i listen to a lotta beastie boys that shit sounds HOT with good subs. and some good techno. yeah its really late over here on the east coast prolly time i get to sleep ;-) keep the advice comin guys

oh yeah and is diamond audio good ihave enver heard

Diamond audio makes a lot of very good stuff, but just like any other company they have high end and low end equipment. I like a lot of their higher end stuff that i have heard. As for hooking it up, it sounds like you need a new deck pretty bad. Other than that it should be pretty strait forward. Power from the battery. Ground from a good solid clean non painted area in the trunk somewhere. run your remote turn on from the deck along with a new ground wire so you can ground your amp and deck at the same place.(otherwise you will get more noise) Run your RCA cables on the opposite side of the car than you run your power wire. Make sure your amp is not mounted to metal, the easiest way to avoid this is to just mount it to your box. Make sure you use big enough cable for whatever wattage your amp is. What kind of amp do you have or are you planning on getting? That would have a lot to do with what kind of subs you shoud get(dual voice coil, 2 ohm, 4 ohm, 8 ohm, etc.) One twelve is plenty for 95% of people who are looking for systems. It just has to do with what sub what enclosure and how much power. I have two custom tens made by the bass mechanic on this forum in his own custom box, with way too much power(mtx 8100d 1500 watts) and it hit 147.7 db and has an insane range of sound. That is very much overkill for almost everyone who has ever heard it. He also has a dual eight inch box that sounds almost the exact same but isn't quite as loud or as expensive. If it were me and I would get an mtx 6500d and run one dual voice coil twelve in a custom sealed box since you listen to a lot of music with fast bass. Or if you want a step up from that I would go with one of Kevin's(bass mechanic) dual eight boxes and one of the amps that he has. So I hope that helps a little.
