My friend has been getting threats from unknown people over the internet, saying things like (get an alarm on your car by this weekend). i'll say that it is a 5th gen sedan. I recommended a fuel cut-off, relocate hood cable, and make sure all the alarm parts (siren, control box, battery) are under the hood. He does have stereo mods and needs to make the trunk secure. What does everyone here recommend, we need to get this done, I don't take this as a joke.

I would actually remove the stereo equipment if I heard someone was playing around like that. Seriously, it may take like an hour to unplug everything... buy some cheapo stereo and two shitty speakers for like a hundred bucks and drive with that until your ass is clear. Especially if they know he has a system, if they pop the trunk to see nothing... that'd be pretty funny. :D

Rent a car that looks just like it. And park yours at a friend's house.

or you could take the engine, system, and wheels out before you got to bed at night, leave everything on bricks and roll down the windows...

itll look like someone stole it already...

cmon, who would want to steal a car that already looks stolen;NutKick;

that would be pretty funny. I played a joke with one of my friends one night, I drove his truck into my garage, and took his front seats out, drove them back to his house, and just sat them in the place of his truck. It was sooo funny. He had moved my teg in the mall one night, an I had heart failure...so payback sucks!

just make sure the car is parked on your property, call the police and tell them about the threat , then if anyone trys anything ............. make my day law.

i don't think there's such thing as something "unknown" on the internet. ;) get their ip, call their provider and tell them you've been harassed (not sure it's the correct word) from that IP address.

better yet - stay away from suspicious online chat rooms and learn to hide your own identity on the net.

Get an IP sniffer, it's the most basic thing you can get to find out their ip blah blah blah.

As for the car get an alarm pager and park the car in the garage.

How are they contacting you? AIM, IRC, e-mail, or what?

You can't always get their IP if they send you a message, but if you can respond to them, you can get them to give you their IP without knowing it... You just need some webspace and the ability to see the IP addresses of people who access one of your files. If you can't see server logs, then use a simple CGI-bin app to log the IP of anyone who accesses it, otherwise just use a blank 1x1 image file. Now create an HTML formatted message and point to that image or CGI-bin app in a < IMG SRC=your_URL> tag. When the person views your message, it will get that URL from your site and now you have logged his IP. If you can't send him HTML formatted messages, then just use a little social engineering to trick him into viewing your URL. By the time he sees that it's blank, you already have his IP and time stamp in your logs.

If you get the IP, it's important to also get the timestamp (and time zone), since some people have dynamic IPs.

yep. timestamp is important.
also, he can use netstat to get any IP from ICQ/AIM connections.

AIM connects people directly? I always thought the messages were relayed through an AIM server... I never bothered to check, but I figured they did, since it works behind firewalls.

i've had "random" people AIM me before that wanted all this information about me. Asked me my first and last name, where I live, what car I drive, ect. It was oviously somebody from this site, kind of pisses me off, but you couldn't find my house even if you did know those things. Map quest doesn't even know where I live for god sakes.

anyways, just disable the car for a week or two (I wont list them again, everybody has already done that) and also take out anything valuble in the car (oviously)

Here's my plan if someone tries to screw with my car:

1) Wait for the piss-ants to show up
2) Crow bar in the head
3) Post own3d pics on HAI

Or you can get yourself a nice hand cannon and use the fuckers as target practice

wouldn't argue on this one, i'm not an AIM person, but ICQ does connect directly and works through firewalls like magic too. server is used initially to get a local ip. then communication goes directly. but i'll check that.

actually my dad caught 2 people stealing radios from his dealership walked up right behind them and said "now your stealing radio's huh" the kid immediatly dropped what he was doing and ran like a bat outta hell.... What the thieve didnt know is that I was waiting with my dads unloaded glock in my hand standing by the fence he jumped... When the cops arrived they said that scince it was on our property that we could have shot him and not see one day in the pen. Insted it was much more fun to watch him beg for mercy in court.

The other kid got away with some POS deck and he was smart enough to run out the front.
