will a new shifter alone solve the "bump bump" into second, slight grind into second in the cold. i understand throws will be shortened,,,all that, but will it fix the reluctance to allow shifts at certain times??

Quite a bit of money. Tranny's are labor intensive. The last shop I went to charged 450 just to drop the tranny

if your tranny feels notchy, more often that not it just needs some new gear oil. if that doesn't fix it, then one should investigate the synchros. cheap things first :)
