I just tested my compression and here is what I got

148 - 150 - 80 - 149

oviously my 3rd cylinder is the problem. I did it twice and got a 60 and an 80, but if it was this low wouldn't I be burning a lot of oil? This was done with a cheapo NAPA brand compression guage. Is it possible that I messed it up, or is the cylinder just dead?

Low compression doesnt necessarily mean it shoudl be burning oil, it can be caused by bad valves, or a bad HG too. A leakdown test is where you find the actual problem at this point. You can try putting a little oil down in the #3 cyl and rotate the engine by hand a few turns and then redo the test. If the numbers jump way up tehn you have a ring problem. If the numbers stay the same then the issue lies elsewhere.

thanks for your help Tobi :) ill try doing a leak down test tommorow. do you just drop say a T-spoon of 10W30 thru the spark plug hole, then crank it by hand and then do the compression as normal?

Should bad compression effect power at all? because it feels as peppy as it ever was:confused:

Yes that'll work.

Yes it can.

Isn't that kind of hard to determine in a Honda at elevation???

Sometimes D series Hondas get carbon on the valves making them have low comp. readings. They run just fine and they dont respond to oiling the rings. So if thats the case run a couple of cans of BG 44K through it and retest it in a month.

A few shots of nitrous should break it loose. :D

has to be wet though. :D

Little auto tranny fluid, little water, peice of vacuum line, ALOT of smoke, it'll be fixed and free of carbon. I'm sure Tobi has heard of this.

Yeah used to do it on old 4.0 liter jeeps that wouldnt pass emissions. Take em out back and runa quart of tranny fliuid through the cavuum port with a .050 NOS jet in the end of the vacuum hose. They always made the FD show up. hahahahaha!
