Hey,

Im an Australian, and all our cars are right-hand-drive. Im just wondering if you guys can legally drive a left-hand-drive car over there.

I noticed in the movie The Fast and the Furious, that the yellow R33 GTR is RHD.

I know we cant import any Mitsubishi Eclipse's because from my knowledge they were all built LHD.

Be great if you could let me know.

BTW - Yes even 'down under' the Jap imports find they way. I drive an R33.

Thanks

It doesnt matter if the car is RHD or LHD here. As long as it passes the required emission laws...

If its an import that is not US DOT approved it also has to pass crasha nd safety testing before it will be allowed US titling.

So he'll need to have 2 of those cars? One for them to test and the other for him to have, right?

Actually three. To pass a car for crash testing it has to endure frontal and side impact testing. If it fails the failing issues must be resolved and then retested for acuracy before it can be let loose on the steets. THat is part of the reason we dont have Lotus Elises here in the states ecause no private buyer would pony up the $150k for cars to crash test.

^ except for bill gates...remember when he wanted (i think it was a porshe) and bought them so that they could do the tests and pass it just so he could own one?

Aren't we supposed to get the Lotus Elise next year? I thought it was being brought over with a Toyota motor and 6 speed tranny.

Fast and the Furious had many thing that were illegal, I would count on them to tell me whats legal and whats not.

Is it possible that somebody would of already tested the r33 here? they are pretty popular cars

Yes finally after 5 years. This time the factory is doing the testing though.

Bill Gates crash tested the Porsche 959 so he could drive it on the streets.

No, Sun Motorsports was importing street legal Elises for 3 years now. They just swapped the motor with a Type R one and it was street legal./

I wonder how the crash test rules apply to older or "classic" cars? Some friends of my family got a Rolls Royce at the silvertip auction in montana..it was a RHD from like the freaking 30's or something. Damn cool car to drive around..it always freaked people out to see nobody in the "drivers seat."

So if you had a car that had a VIN from something really old...could you be exempt from the crash test rules? I wonder...

I "think" it has to be up to par with whatever "laws/rules" were enforced when the car was produced.

motorex reportedly spent 1 million to get the skylines dot approved. that's why it costs 16g's to get the obd I's converted while it costs 23g's to get the obd II. now if anyone wants to donate to the "steve needs to bring his r33 to the US" fund, please don't hesitate. :)

Yeah but you still had to buy them from Sun, They still had to be crash tested to be street legal. Either Sun had to pony up or their customers did.
Now that Lotus will be offering the vehicles under the factory sheild, Sun will most likely stop selling them or go on to other imports.

There are some skylines over here, it's just not very common because they are so expensive to import and convert to be street legal.

yes in the united states they are being sold in Cali so im told i did a little reading and it backed it up but therefore i do not believe everything i hear or read. would the drivers side be on the right... prob. not account of having them shipped over, customs would have a sh*t fit. :Peace: and i have asked state cops in PA and they have told me that its illegal in the state of PA, but if i had a skyline and it was decked out to the fullest, they would need the eye in the sky to keep up in my own opinion. :king:

oh and im new to this so check out my pro to see what i got no pics yet cuz no scanner....

oops i guess i should have kept reading on in this ..lmmfao

Believe it or not, there is hardly any "Gems" running around here with the AWD turbo's. Dont know why, but they are not that common, its probably due to the flooding of imports, mostly nissans like the skyline, 300zx, GTIR's and stuff.

Skaterkid
01-18-2004, 04:13 PM
Yeah, Isuzu's are rare everywhere. But you gotta have more than we have in the US. Fewer than 800 Impulse RS's (same engine/chassis combo). It's really hard to find one.

my mail-lady has a RHD 91 Legacy, I'm waiting for it to break so I can talk her into selling it to me.

the toyota/elise is gonna be substantially different from the EDM elise. About 200 lbs worth of safety and convenience bullshit. I think both the Sun Elise and the new one had to be altered in some way to pass the crash tests.
