View Full Version : microsoft windows xp service pack 1
I've been running a couple of xp boxes behind my firewall. I also have a box that dual boots redhat9 and xp.
I finally bit the bullet and installed service pack 1 on the boxes. It turned my 2.08 ghz amd chip into a p90. What the HECK is up with that? What a piece of SHIT!
I am reloading xp and never again will I load their bullshit service packs. Since I'm protected by my linux firewall, don't run IE or outlook (bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha - what shitware!), and only use windows for gaming, reading mail & web surfing, I won't apply any of their damned patches.
I could not believe how slow my machines got after installing SP1.

I can't even DL service pack 1 and I need it. Says my copy of windows XP is not authorized or some shit.

you can get the service pack from other places online if you don't have a "legit" copy.

hmm, i'll have to look around. As far as I know it's a "legit" copy but about 10 people got the same copy, soooo. lol

I just installed XP w/ SP1 on a 600MHz Athlon... seems as fast or faster than Windows 98, which is pretty damn suprising. No real reason to upgrade to XP, other than compatibility (everything seems to want Win98 SE and all I had was FE), and Windows Movie Maker is nice.
Don't do it. Trust me. I cannot BELIEVE how slow this machine got (running windows right now) after patching it.
But - if you do want sp1, I have it on my webserver, and it's 133 meg. The only downside is the 256k upload speed I have.

Maybe it would help if you actually had WinXP SP1, versus WinXP and patching it with SP1. I don't think anyone else has had problems with it john, must be an issue with your setup or hardware. ;)
No - the hardware is fine. It ran everything very well until I patched it.
What is winxp sp1 if not a patch/service pack? Is there an image of the OS with sp1 already applied?
The only reason I did it was due to something I read in a PC World rag recently, and didn't believe it. Well, it was true. At least in my case.
The setup runs linux very very well. It's windows.

Yes, WinXP SP1 is like an image of the PS with SP1 already applied, but it's a microsoft image so it still goes through cab files and installs that way. Did you want to try it or something?
NO! NO WAY! I am going to reload the boxes with xp and never ever patch them. EVER. They ran FAST w/o sp1 applied, and the are now crawling along like P90s. :)
Thanks for the info. Yet another reason to really love unix...

i didnt notice a difference after SP1.
I must just suck. Either that, or XP is smart enough to know how much I don't like microsoft. ;)

hhahaha I have installed SP1 on a number of machines and haven't had any speed issues.

A GREAT example here - Unreal II. It ran flawlessly prior to patching the box, and now the video is stuttering. Nothing else has changed. I reinstalled the nvidia driver after the first time I brought unreal 2 up afterwards, since it was so jerky.
God I hate windows. :)
