Has anyone done business with Maaco? I am considering taking my friend's car there. I fudged it up pretty bad. There quote is $1,030. The next closest quote is $1,280 at R&R on 44th and kipling. They will paint the whole car, as it is cheaper with their 'President's special' which is $225. If they paint matched, it would cost $355, but it would only paint the new hood and bumper cover. It has a 2 year warranty for the gloss and finish.
I've personally heard bad reviews on Maaco, saying their job is crap and the paint starts cracking after a year. Has anyone else been dissatisfied with their work?

yes, i am very dissatisfied with their work and it is true that the paint starts chipping after a year. Spend the extra $200 and go down to the other place that you mentioned. You'll thank yourself later.

Maaco's paint will start either chipping, fading, peeling, or cracking BUT look at the bright side with the warranty, you get a new paint job whenever it happens. Personally I'd take it elsewhere.

Yeah I think they told me the same thing, which doesn't leave much to warranty does it? I had my old Pontiac painted there to help get rid of the chipping that was already happening due to the hard primer GM used during those years, and sure enough it started to chip and crack and leave primer grey eye sores within 2 years. I would never take another car there to get painted, even if it was a $50 junker.

maaco paint = ok
maaco prep = bad

my first civic was so fucked when i got it. me and a friend did all the prep work on it (our first time doing it) then i took it down and had the cheap ass like $200 paint job at maaco done. i traded the car in a little bit ago (after having it for 5 years) and the only problem was the paint had faded on the roof. that's probably because the only time i waxed it was about 2 weeks after the paint job haha.

well fuck. We came to the decision to get the whole car sprayed and save $140. If they know their job sucks, why don't they improve upon it. Or is it just a quick fix to please the customer?

that's what I've heard too. They suck horribley at prepping the car, but spraing they're actually pretty decent.

I'm thinking about taking my car there to respray my car and so I can do my spoiler that I just got, woot!

if you prep it maaco can do an awesome job. If you choose the cheap options they have they just paint over the existing paint. It looks terrible.

my only question is what exactly do you have to prep? Should you just wetsand it down a little or sand it all the way down to metal?

If they don't prep it, what is the new layer of paint going to stick to? They don't just spray paint on paint. It won't stick. You have to put a primer layer on for something for the paint to stick to.
