Well I have ordered enough mods to put me to about 270 rwhp, which seems great, but I found a great deal on a piggy back ecu that should put me to a little over 300 at the wheels.

Should I buy it or should I amke the car handle better ie, rims, tires and sway bars?

Peter Farrel Supercars

It is programmed for my mods with a switch for stock boost or 12lbs or with my mods and intercooler for 15 lbs.

i say it depends on your goals. get it if it lets you reach your goals, but save your money if you plan on going standalone eventually.

I do plan on going standalone sometime, but when I do I can sell it for about what I pay for it.

Or iI could get tires.

Power is everything. Suspension? Does the car have springs & shocks on it now? :)

When I hear the words RX-7 3rd-Gen the words up graded cooling system pop to mind. Seriously, that would be my next upgrade just because those engines are so prone to detonation, and the sensitivity of the rotary.

Cooling is really not that big of a probelm if you take care of the car and keeo the boost down. That is unless you sit in trafic in texas and then run it hard.

I've read about mildly modded RX-7's blowing engines on autox courses. And by mild I mean CAI and exhaust. Maybe I'm just a paranoid SOB;)

The problem comes when you lean the car out at all. FDs run really rich cause one good knockk will blow the apex seals.

So there is the rule of 3. After 3 mods you need the ecu reprogramed since the stock a/f curves will be too lean.. The bigest problem is when people either bump up the boost on a stock ecu or run with no cat.. The stock ecu is way to lean and you see detonation.

Yup lean+turbo rotary=new engine

And of course the RX-7 ECU is incredibly non-adaptive.

For some reason they designed it not to adapt to changes in a/f or backpressure.

go with suspension... a good suspension job can make up for a lot in the twisties...

The power bug is starting to get to me. I installed a new exhaust today and the difference was huge. The stock suspension is great. It could be better but more power is really tempting.

my roommate had the piggy back PFS controler for his FD but never installed it before he got rid of the car.... the guy he sold it to said it was amazing though... PFS is a very well known reputible shop for RX7s... I say get the PFS unit

I have been reading up on the PFS unit and I have heard that as long as Peter Farrell Tunes your car personally it is great, but I have heard disappointing stories about when you justrun it straight out of the box.

I have started to look at stand alones like the APex'i Power FC.
Does anyone know a Power FC tuner in Colorado?

Save your money and get the power fc.It also comes with a boost controller.
As far as tunning I cant really help you there.Call around.Denver should be the main area to call.Try this place.racing trendz 303 756 8884 in denver. They may be able to help you out.I called them a couple of times about a front mount intercooler instalation.Dont buy parts from them though. Not cheap.
The best places for parts for an fd is www.rxecret7.com and rx7trix.com
Rotary Xecret is better for pricing ask for benson. But if they dont have it in stock try rx7trix ask for brandon the owner.Real good guy to deal with and very knowlegeable.
by the way what brand intake and exhaust did you go with?

I've not found anyone who can tune the PFC. I'm considering flying someone out here who can tune it.

Redline motorsports offered to tune the A/F but the timing on the FD is a black art which few dare toy with.

I'm running the stock map and I like it. I had to turn my boost down for the winter cause i break loose once turbo #2 kicks in so I'm not too worried about more power for now but once summer comes around...

let me know if you'd like to go in on the expense of transplanting a tuner for a weekend. I've got a number of other fders around which may go in on it too.

What is the highest boost you can run on the stock program?
Also what boost level comes on the stock PFC program.

I might just get the PFC, and get a comander later down the road.

Typically you can run 12psi "safely". Up here you can see 13-14 and still be safe due to the altitude differences. I always had a wacky transition with a manual boost controller. Yet another reason the PFC is a great investment.

You really dont need a commander right off. I just got a commander last weekend. Until then I borrowed my friend's commander when I needed it.

You're welcome to borrow mine. It pop's right out. You can use it to make the boost and A/F changes and your set.

Also, not to torture you... but kelly (inis) on coloradoracing . net is selling off his FD parts. and he's got some smoking parts there. look under the XTC motorsports link to find him.

Thanks

I wanted his wheels bad. But they are already sold.

Does 850 with commander seem like a good deal?

It is the best I have come across so far, and I was wondering if I should keep looking?

OMG!! Yes! Dont read this, just go buy it right now!

Just make sure its the latest, or close to, of the PFC and commander. They should be ver 5.08 for the commander and 5.xx for the PFC, I believe. Check the club forums for details.
