View Full Version : Anyone use an engine damper?

I'm thinking of getting one for my car. I'm going to have 2 choices, J's Racing and another brand that will be released at SEMA. Chris (K20A2) is the one who informed me of this new option.
Does it cause more vibrations in the cabin like the engine mount inserts do? I want to keep the engine from torqueing so much. and possibily reduce some wheel hop, but i'd prefer not to increase the NVH in the cabin.
Any input?

One of it's job is to keep it from vibrating, aka- keeping the motor in it's place and not moving around.

I can't afford your pricey toys.

I have one and it feels stock at idle, and stiffer on shifts.

You know you can. We'll work it out.

Do you think it's worth the extra money to get a engine torque damper instead of engine mount inserts?
I'm still trying to get a price on the new damper from K20A2 what was supposely released at SEMA

I had motor mount inserts in my Si. They shake at idle, where the damper does not. I would go with the damper

my car rattles enough as is. thanks for the input

I don't suppose they make those dampers for the SOHCs yet eh? I've got the inserts anywho, and they are okay... the sohc doesn't shake and rattle that much.
Could you just use the steering damper from an air-cooled Beetle and Ghetto rig it in there?

it would depend on the amount of damping. wouldn't hurt to try. i have access to some scrap metal and some machine tools
ya know... under damped, overdamped, critically damped

The VW dampner is oil filled and is also three times the size of what I use. It would be tough to make it work and then findout it doesnt have the strength to "dampen". A little birdie told me that a new aftermarket one will be out soon that covers more models and is made in the USA so it will be cheaper than the overpriced JDM units.
How much are the current JDM units?
What about a steering damper from a motorcycle? Same situation? Not enough damping force?

Steering dampers are made to allow movement and not restrict it, but to restrict large amounts of movement in small amounts of time. An engine dampner is to allow small amounts of vibration to be lost in the assembly but turn solid when there is movement and not allow any movement at all when it goes past a certain point.

Around $300
Ouch, if you get a damper and new motor mounts, will it vibrate? Or will the damper absorb the vibrations?

my understanding is that the torque damper should absorb the large torqueing from the engine but allow the vibrations to be absorbed by the engine mounts.
where as the engine mount inserts transmit the vibrations to the chassis

right.
Kwando: So you don't twist your frame in half from all the torque right?;)

You may consider getting this engine damper for your car:

kinda skeptical. no offense.. just never heard of that brand.
On a side note, the Ingalls one is suppose to finally be released this month.

Then again you could solve the problem for about $1.50 the way the domestic guys have been doing it for 50 years.
Install a short piece of chain so it has only a small amount of slack. The engine can move freely for a small distance then the torque strap stops any further motion. Depending on how much slack you put in it, and if you include any rubber in the end points of the chain you can get just about any degree of snubbing you want.
Sorry -- I just have a problem with spending several hundred dollars to solve a $10 problem.

only problem i see in that is the jerk the engine will receive when the chain goes tight.
I think that's what the rubber would be for that he was talking about. Also, if you made it tight enough, I would think that the motor wouldn't have much momentum yet before it got pulled back. But I do like the idea of a damper better.
