View Full Version : I'm tossing this idea around (honda motors)...

Well, as some of you may know, I've been planing on doing a B20Z swap... Problem is, the B20Z is hard to come by, and the B20B just isn't enough oomph for me. I'm not planning on building a monster, nor am I doing a cr-vtec swap. I just want a decent, strong motor that will pull hard from the bottom of the tach up.
Well, since I can't find the high compression B20Z, I thought I'd get an LS motor, bore it out to 84mm (stock B20 bore) and throw in some arias 84mm 10.4 comp pistons. Then for the price of the LS motor ($700-800) plus the price of the piston set and install ($600), I'd have a nice home-made B20 with more power than than a B20Z for around $1350. Sohfast.com (the only place with the B20Z in stock) wants $1500 shipped for it. I could also do the same thing to the B20B motor (sans the bore job) but I would then have to replace the intake mani, find an alternator, etc... Either way, I figure it would be around the same amount of work.
I wouldn't be running it past the stock redline, so I don't think rods would be an issue. I also figure stock B20 sleeves or 84mm bored LS sleves should be ok to handle 10.4 c/r cylinder pressures...
Sound like a good idea? Anything I'm not thinking of?
BTW, if you've got an LS or B20 motor for sale, hit me up ;)

Check J_Smuggler's posting about honda swaps. Good deal on B18C. Decent on the CRV longblock and B16A swap.

Dont the '99+ CRVs have higher compression?

yeah, thats where the B20Z (9.6 c/r) comes from. Problem is, its not a JDM motor, which means its not being imported. You can only get the through insurance companies when somebody wrecks their brand new CR-V... thats why its so damn hard to get ahold of. I've had hmotorsonline.com on the case for almost 2 months now, and still nothing.
The only real difference between the B20B and B20Z (assuming in a civic = have to use LS intake mani) is the compression 8.8 v. 9.6, and thats enough for a good 20 hp, so I figure if I can put together a 2.0 B-series (LS or B20) with 10.4 compression, I should be doing a bit better than the B20Z for about the same price.

What is the stock bore of the LS motor? And how much material would you be taking out of there?

The gsr tranny seems to be a pretty good match, people are generally happy with that. The shorter gears of a B16/itr tranny would make it a little quicker, but as far as I've been able to judge, wouldn't really be necessary.
Personally, I'm probably gonna get an itr tranny just for the LSD. If I come across a jdm b18c tranny with the optional LSD, I would spring for that too.
As for the B20Z, good luck finding one. I've had a hell of a time finding a place that stocks them. Sohfast.com is the only place I've come across that actually has them, but they wanted 1500 for the longblock alone ;UgH: The 99+ jdm b20b is also identical to the b20z internally (9.6 comp. pistons), but is equally hard to find. If you find a place that sells them, definitely let me know.

LS=81mm, crv=84. After a little more research I've found that taking that much out would require sleeving, and I don't have that kind of money... so basically, that idea is kaput. :o

Thats what I figured. The stock sleeves probably wouldn't hold up too long after being machined that much.LS=81mm, crv=84. After a little more research I've found that taking that much out would require sleeving, and I don't have that kind of money... so basically, that idea is kaput. :o

I was under the impression that the b18b block and b20b block were of the same casting, one just bored at the factory... That why I thought it would be OK. Turns out theyre different castings. :smashfrea
