"It seems that car thieves have found another way to steal your car or truck without any effort at all. The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or truck, write down the VIN number from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN number. The car dealer's parts department will make a duplicate key from the VIN number and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car. He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is to walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop shop with your vehicle. You don't believe it? It IS that easy. To avoid this form happening to you, simply put some tape (electrical tape, duct tape or a medical tape) across the VIN label located on the dashboard. By law, you cannot remove the VIN number, but you can cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief. I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other cat thief steals another car or truck."

to tell you the truth it doesnt even take that much .... most lock smiths have a program that will cut a key for you off the vin number.

hrmm..maybe you could get an alarm? or lojack early warning? or a car that has radio transponder keys.. :)
I dont think I'll be sticking and ghetto ass tape on my dash anytime soon...besides, you know how many other places the vin is listed on a car? I'm sure they could find it somewhere else.

its just one more way to protect your car, particularly if you don't have an alarm. also, most vin #s are on the inside of the car like the trunk, etc.

i'm sure dealerships are checking some kind of registration or proof of ownership.
but you can never be too safe. I like celica man's idea.

I think all it would take is for the crook to have a friend at the dealership, and then you're car is gone. Needless to say, I have mine covered up (even though I have several other countermeasures in place :D ). But I made it so they could see the JH4DC4 part, so they at least know it's "only a LS". :)

Hrmm that sounds odd. But then again, dealerships do screw up.

i wish, but they don't.
i posted about this in another thread in off topic.
my friend who owned a 2000 civic si did this once when he lost his key. another friend has tried it as well just because he didn't think they would actually just give it too you.
they asked for the vin, year and color, that was it!

Acutally it does take proof of ownership, I locked my key in my car and had to go get one from the dealership. So that everyone knows it is not nearly that easy.

yeah, i went down to the bmw dealership to try to get a master key cut, and they won't do it unless the name on the registration matches the name of the person coming in. they cross reference it, send in the request, get the key laser cut, and then charge you 70 bucks for it. alot of the bmw guys just slide a business card or something to cover that vin #.
