Do they break the steering column to get into the ignition and then start it?

Its the same way that most cars get stolen..however, its just reasonably easy in a Honda. Hell, its reasonably easy to steal almost any car if you really want to. I dont worry too much about people posting how to steal them on here, the people that are going to steal them, already know how. The people that dont know how to steal them, prolly wouldnt do anything with the information anyway, except maybe do something to make their car a little harder to steal.

Hell..they did a nice spot on Dateline (I think?) about how to break into and steal a Honda..its not like its anything new. Unless its the RSX or something.. :)

The intention of my posting was to come up with preventative measures by understanding the problem first. Besides, I wasnt asking for the full details on what tools to use to break into a car, etc etc. Just general weakspots.

i stripped out all the screws that surround the steering column so it cant be taken apart.

Good idea. But they can break the cover still, right?

a plastic cover isnt going to stop anyone. I cant rememeber ever seeing one where the theif actually took the time to take the screws out anyway.

All you need is a flathead screwdriver and a phillips. unscrew unscrew unscrew...hold, turn, go. I watched a guy do it to my car....Good thing he was just showing me what people do lol.

on late 80's/early 90's models, I don't think a box on the column would do it, it only takes about 30 seconds max. to steal one if the thief knows what he's doing(I think it's best if I don't say how). I would think the most effective theft deterrent is to cut off fuel or spark with a hidden switch or something. Don't put all your faith in an alarm, there are a few ways for a thief to disable it.

you should only be so lucky for them to have a phillips and unscrew it for you. i've taken a couple of my friends to view their cars at the salvage yards. and the whole steering column is torn apart, the key ignitiion looks like it was split in half and the car looked like hell.

Yeah I've seen thsoe too. But this was my friend and he was just showing me that anyday he could steal my car:mad: . But I didn't realize how easy it was until it took him about a minute and a half to start it up...

What did it look like? I've never heard of this. And it sounds easy as hell to break...

I am thinking of a type of sec. system. You put a lock-bolt straight through both wheels, and lock them together so that the wheels couldnt be moved, the car couldn't be moved, and the theif couldn't steer. Relocating the main fuse box isn't a bad idea either, and after you relocate it, take the main computer fuse with you, and get a lock for the fuse box. I guarantee not even the top honda techs could figure out where mine is hidden.

Honda techs and Honda thieves are two different kinds of people though.

Theives tend to think more like you and I would, the place you figure nobody would look, that's where they'd probably look.

a lock bolt through both wheels could be cut with a bolt cutter, and if you had a shifter lock, they could pop the hood, disconnect the linkage, put it in first and drive away

What if you just locked it into reverse?

djet820
10-05-2003, 07:27 AM
But how woudl you keep it in reverse? I was thinking...what if you just locked your wheels with those cop thingies...forgot what they're called.

Im thinking of using light beam sensors from a garage door opener and hooking them up to the lights and the horn, and my siren that I have under the hood

You could use the denver boot. that would prevent it from moving anywhere.
