Okay, so my car hit 105k ('00 si) and i needed to get some cams on a budget. ( my car has a history of needing them replaced, something about an oil change with no oil being put back in and being run) So I bought a set of used stock cams from some dude for 40bucks with the springs for it as well, with only 40k miles on them. But now I need to know what else I need to do a cam swap. I know I want to go ahead a replace the head gasket, but what else am I going to need? Do I need to polish the cams as well while they are out? What torque specs are there? Any info you guys could give me would help a bunch! Thanks!

You shouldn't need a head gasket. If it was run with no oil, are you sure the cams are the only problem? How do you know if the cams are the problem? I don't have torque specs, but you will need cam seals for both of them. If you haven't done your timing belt lately, it is a cheap pm part while your at it. You'll need specs for valve clearance as well. A valve cover gasket. That's about all I can think of right now.

You should consult your Helm for torque specs. When i installed CTR cams in my GSR, I didnt polish it. There was already some wear from the previous owner but nothing major.
My buddy has a special tool. I guess it was made for valves that sit low inside the head where a normal box wrench wouldnt easily reach. He bought the tool for his B16A and we definitely needed it for my B18C.
As far as your head gasket goes, if it's not leaking or blown, dont worry about it. You might have to get a new valve cover seal though for as many miles as you have. My car has about 40k and all I needed was a dab of hondabond here and there.

Waaaait. New cams when the motor has been dry? Never heard of that one. Maybe new berings?

Yeah, somethings a bit fishy here. Cams don't just "go bad" and need to be replaced. Never heard of cams going bad due to running the engine with no oil.

Okay! So, When the engine was ran with no oil, not my mistake, my uncle took it all apart and and told me that my cams were scored and I needed a new set after readjusting the timing, which had skipped a tooth. Just before that, I had him replace the timing belt and water pump, so that should still be good. Maybe if I tell you what's going on this might help diagnose what's up: It has lost lots of power and hestitates now when I accelerate. If I hold a constant rpm aroung 5k, it jumps back and forth between 4 and 6 rpms. this is what lead me to believe that it needed new cams. And for the helms, got stolen, so I have to get another. i really appriciate all the help I have gotten and get. Thanks~ Nitra

I have that problem where if you hold it at 4k it will jump around too, but I'm having idling problems and I need to swap out to my old cam to see if that helps. Are your valves adjusted right? I know mine are tapping a little loud, and I was going to first adjust that tomarrow and see if that fixes everything. When you say your uncle took everything apart, does that include top and bottom end, or just top end?

He took the top apart and said that it was the rear cam that got scored and that was the only one to skip a tooth too. He said the vavles were fine and compression is still normal, but it the motors runs louder than it used too with no major tapping. But for the idling, it idles just fine. Weird huh? Let me know if when you adjust your valves if that helped any.
