What's up guys 'n gals,

I've currently planned to undergo a project on my 350z now that I have put 20" rims on the rear and sucessfully slowed down my car :o . Does anyone know of any ppl out there that work with Nissan Differentials really well and would be willing to have an open mind and see if a R&P gear swap is possible? Currently I have the base 350z model which has a 3.5xx FD ratio in a R200 differential. I'm going to be getting my hands on a R200V (viscuous LSD) from another 350z owner. Only problem with the R200V is it has a taller gear on the order of 3.3xx ratio. Now my _project_ concerns salvaging a 98 240sx R200V differential and swapping the 4.083 FD into the current 350z R200V.

1.) Any1 think this is this even possible given both R200V differentials in the 240sx & 350z have had a good 5 years inbetween them?

2.) Anyone out there willing to see if this can even be done? Ie. opening up the diffs and seeing if the R&P gears can be successfully swapped? I'm willing to pay labor of course, I'm definately not differential inclined so I would be happy to get some help from some people who know their $hit :D

I already know the R200V can be put in a base 350z cause it's been done before, but I think the diff retainers have to be slightly modified. If the gears cannot be swapped, I wonder if a 240sx R200V can be put into the 350z given they are both R200V. Of course the part that bolts to the drive shaft may have a totally different bolt pattern, so I'm hoping that part can be swapped to fit up in the new Z.

If all there where to work, Nissan has 4.636 upgrade gears for the 240sx so I would actually be putting those babies in. But all in all, any input on this from anyone?

Thanks eveyr1, l8te!

The r200 diff has been used for many years in the nissan line up. A z31 300zx sports a r200v differential. That particular diff can not be swapped into anything newer than that generation. I.E. I can't take a turbo z31 diff and swap it into my s13 hatch. If the axle bolt pattern or length is different chances are you can't swap out the guts. Instead of buying 240sx differebtial get your hands on a 91-98 infiniti j30 diff. It is almost exaclty the same diff in the 350z. The final drive on that is 4.081. I think that would be your best bet or get rid of those heavy ass 20's and stick with the 17's that came on the car.

Ok here ya go. 1998cc the turbo 300ZX diff is a r230v unit which is physically bigger which is why it won't work. The NA versions had the r200v unit. The 300zx NA and the 240sx r200s both have a final drive of 4.083. The J30 is 4% taller at 3.92. I suppose that if the 350Z uses a r200 it is possible. But you have to remember that Nissan carefully matched the redline to put the shift at the hp peak of the next gear. So be careful you may actually make the car slower. Why do you want to do this the car is already geared pretty tight. If you need is help I have worked with the diff before and also have a FSM which gives me proper shim widths.

Get rid of those POS wheels and put back on the stock ones. That's my .02

Hmm thanks for the input guys, I'm keeping the rims cause they make the car look just absolutely bad ass :D . I want to get a shorter final drive to make up for having the bigger rims. I think in the long run with the added grip of 20x10's and some big power, that should make for some sweet hook-ups on launch, provided I can get the car geared how I want. I didnt even think about the infiniti's diff, so definately thanks for that added bit of info :D . And CO S14, I can definately use some insight once I get a stock 350z lsd & some upgrade gears in my hands to see if the swap is possible. I'm doing this for the general 350z community that's actually interested in differential mods, a few of us have been wanting to see if this is even possible, most for the rallyers. I just want better acceleration :D . With the Crawford plenum, the car now keeps making HP the entire way to redline, so basically shifting at 6500rpms is finally a good thing ;) . So I dont really have to worry about the best shifting limit, unless I understood your post wrong. Thanks guys!
