Help I believe that I my engine has thrown a rod but I don't quite know what to look for. I have removed the cylinder head but I can't tell what the problem is. I have pretty much made up my mind to go ahead and buy the H22A motor and trans but I really would like to know if it is possible to tell if a piston is damaged or a rod disconnected with just having the cylinder head off and if not what else do I have to take apart? Thanks in advance. If I need to post pics I can.

Don't pull the head just yet. Get under the car and pull the oil pan off (you'll probably have to remove the exhaust A-pipe to get to it). You may have a windage tray and oil pickup to remove also. Then you can see the crankshaft, rods, and undersides of the pistons.

What is your car doing that makes you think you have a thrown rod?

Well the head is already off and in the morning I will pull the oil pan and take a look. It all started when I was leaving a college parking lot and the car gave me a little jerk. Once a got on the road I started to here some knocking which got louder an louder as I made my way home. I am very machainically inclined but I've never have this type of issue before. I decided to start taking this engine apart after I had it towed to a garage to have them look at it an tell me what they thought. Well to make a long story short I've paid $120 for those guys to just hear the engine so now I'll break it down myself.

Current oil level in engine? Mileage? Maintenance history? Driving history (ie just commuting or a lot of high revs/autocross/drag racing)?

Did the knock get louder at a higher rpm or not? The jerk and subsequent noises may be indicative of a spun bearing.

I have started to dismantle the engine and yep! that's exactly what I found at the number 1 piston. Now that I have started this project I fiqure that I might as well go ahead with doing an overhual. Right now I searching for a "master engine rebuild kit" for the F22A motor. So far the cheapest that I have found is around $650.00.

Yeah - drop the oil pan. Pulling the head may or may not tell you anything.
