View Full Version : Should I buy this?
I want to get this turbo, but is it a good deal? It seems like it is. He should be sending me pictures soon. It is a T3/T4 with a dry housing, "heavy duty bearing," and a 4 bolt downpipe. (whatever he means by that) and is $480. What do you guys think? Oh yeah, I think the manifold I bought from Justin is a Revhard style, so I don't think I'll have any issues with block shaving. I'm not sure however though, can anyone verify this?
*EDIT: Oh yeah, how about I include the link? http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=615266#6563578

yea i was thinkin the same thing but wasnt sure. Overall, it sounds like a pretty good deal.
Here are the pictures he sent me. He appoligized for their poor quality and says that the turbo isn't really rusty because it's brand new. He says he will be taking more pictures outside and will send those. Here they are.
In that first picture I noticed the little tag that looks like a rebuild tag. Does that mean that it has been rebuilt,or do all Garretts have that?

That looks like a nice turbo. The tag is on all Garrett Turbo's as far as I know. My brand new turbo had one just like it, straight out of the Garrett box.

hmm, no wastegate on that. That brings up a question that I've always been curious about: do the guys who run external wastegates ever hook it back up to the exhaust, or do they just dump it directly into the air? How would they get through emissions like that?
Well, you can do both. You get past emissions by making the dumptube go underneath the car where they can't see it. I actually plan on running it back into the exhaust so as to make me a sleeper...maybe.
Well, I've sent the money, let's hope I don't get scammed.

I'm kinda planning on it actually. I mean I won't try to, but when it does go, I'll just get a newer LS (obd1) and buy a Hondata. But I'm not sure how long these 92 Cavilier motors last anyway.

so you really did sell your teg and buy a cavilier?
...why?
Can't steal a car I don't have right?
Anyway, when I get the intercooler from Mark I will have:
- Manifold
- Turbo
- Intercooler
- MBC
- Half style double core radiator
- ENS
- A/F guage
And all that I'll need is everything else. ;) I'd say I'm about $1500 (all in under $400 chunks) away from being done.

Not a fan of the 60-trim but for $480 it will do.

Ya know...I don't really remember it being a 60 trim, hrmmm, that's a little big for what I want to boost on the stock block. Oh well I guess. "beat:

That manifold I sold you is a Maxrev btw, not Revhard :) You may have to do some block trimming if you have a .60 ar compressor housing. I had to hack my block a little ...
Justin
Thanks Justin, I keep forgetting which one it is. I think maybe I'll right it on there with a sharpie. And yeah, Tobi told me I'd probably have to do some shaving no matter what I bought. :) I'm excited.

A 60-trim is big?

According to you it is. Remember when you were ripping on Mark for putting a big turbo on his Type R and not boosting to the moon? I'm not too worried about it anyway. I just need to figure out how to rotate the housings now.

He had a 60-1. HUGE HUGE difference.
And of course I remember. I remember everything I read or hear. It comes in handy.
I'm sure it does, especially when you are alone at night and you left your favorite magizine at your friend's house. ;)

That would be funny if I didn't get all my porn from the Internet.
Oh yeah, and fuck you.
Here are all the Garrett compressor maps:
http://www.turboneticsinc.com/compressor.html?action=display
What you just bought is a T04E "60".
The way it works, if you don't know, is you take the atmospheric pressure (I use 12.0 for Denver) add your desired boost level to that and divide by the atmospheric pressure again. So if you want to run 15lbs of boost you come up with a pressure ratio of 2.25. Find that on the left axis.
Now if your engine don't flow for shit you will make around 250hp (estimating 10hp per lb/min) and be on the vurge of compressor surge. It will also be harder to tune due to how inefficient the turbo is at that point. If your engine flows moderately well for the chosen compressor then you get closer to the center. If you get your engine flowing well enough then you can get toward the right edge of that center efficiency puddle and make around 350hp and have an easy tune. If your engine is working really well it will suck the air right up and bring you all the way to the right where you can make around 480hp but have a more difficult time tuning and be at the limits of the compressor.
Theoretically the 60 trim can make 500hp. I don't really believe that. I'd buy 480hp at sea level on the right day, right engine and state of tune.
Don't pay as much attention to the actual numbers I gave you as much as paying attention the instructions of reading a compressor map.
I actually did know all that stuff, but thanks anyway. I need to look at that stuff again. I'm only going to be boosting like 7-8 pounds though.
