Bill has a Porshe 959 that he couldn't drive here because it wasn't federalized. This pissed him off so he offered to buy a bunch and sacrifice them to crash testing he also sent his layers (which probably cost way more than a few cars) to help out.

Long story short (full here http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content.mv?port_code=autoweek&cat_code=coverstory&loc_code=index&content_code=09282484)
The cars are now legal in the US. Thanks to Bill Gates and his assloads of cash. It wasn't completly his doing, but he sure played a part in it.

I'd say more like %99.9999 of us can't afford it....

Yea he did it for himself, but that doesn't mean we can't take advantage of the positive externalities (econ term). Everyone knows that domestics suck, and a lot of the really cool imports we don't get here... It's good to see someone fighting for us. Maybe he's been wanting to get a skyline.... :D

In what part of my post did I say he should do anything for me??? Calling someone selfish doesn't mean that I said he should do something for myself. Don't you think he could have put that much more into something useful rather than legalizing a stoopid Porsche that he will probably hardly drive? Much less hire a team of fucking lawyers to do it for him. That's selfish, and ignorant wrapped up into one nice neat little package.

Why should he? The guy is worth 100 billion dollars, gives over 100 million a year to charity and provides thousands of people with good paying jobs. If he wants to have a rare Porsche, what's the problem with that?

That's selfish, and ignorant wrapped up into one nice neat little package.

Bill Gates is anything but ignorant. You don't get to be the worlds richest man by being a fool. As for selfish, well why bother getting rich if you're not going to splurge on yourself some?

yeah, and if you had that kind of money, I'm sure that you would never even consider it.... He's a car guy, fighting to own a kick ass car, and now that other .00001% of people in the USA have an opportunity to buy one too... which means that I actually have a chance of seeing one driving around, and saying "hey, thats bad ass", then explaining to my wife why it is bad ass...

whats wrong with that... you just sound like a hater... trust me, I'm 110% sure that he gives his fair share to all kinds of charities, and if you took the time to research it, if you compare the percentage of what he gives of his profit, and the percentage that you give of your money to charity, I'm willing to bet that his percentage is WAY higher... so just lay off a fellow car guy...

no but really I totally agree with Pat on this one, he got there for a reason and if he wanted a bad ass car he had the money and determation to back it up. Same goes for his company, he didnt get there buy "dreaming" about it. There is no reason that you could get to his level if you really tried. Put your self in his shoes and think about it.

I also never said he should put it into a charity. There's no problem with wanting a rare Porsche, but I find something completely fucked up about the fact that he can change a set law because he has a shitload of cash.

Just FYI, the smartest man in the world could still make ignorant choices. Use your head and quit fucking playing my words. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with spending money on yourself, but does the man really need to hire a team of lawyers to legalize a car? Weak.

Wtf? Who are you to say I would never even consider it? You don't know me. Yeah, I could be bad ass too and say "Hey, I'm the shit because I made an opportunity for the richest people in America to own another exotic import" BTW, I see cars all the time driving around that I can't afford. Supras, Vipers, Ferrari's, etc. I don't sit there and fucking gawk over it. I go, "nice car" and forget about it 2 seconds later.

Who cares what I sound like. I'm sure there are things in life that piss you off too, do I call you a hater? Uhhh, no.

BTW, Bill Gates is forced by law to give a certain amount of money to charities. So don't tell me to research before you storm into a situation with flags flying. I have nothing better to do at work than read stoopid issues of Forbes, the Wallstreet Journal, New York Times, and other pointless Bullshit that I couldn'e give a shit less about. I say fuck Bill Gates. He gets props for being a smart guy an succeeding in life, but there's nothing out there that says I have to like him. So, if you wnat to suck his nuts then go suck away, but I think he's a fucken dipshit.

Just for the record I also never said I was a "poor bad ass mofo".

I don't hate Bill Gates because he has alot of money. I guess I can't even really say I hate Bill Gates as a person, I just hate his personality and how he portrays himself to the media. He makes himself seem like a bigger person than everyone else because he whipes his ass with a Franklin.

Hell, If I get rich I am going to hire a Team of Lawyers to legalize me driving a Panzer through city streets.

How could you judge his personality without really meeting the guy? and basing it off the media as I'm sure you know isnt the best way to get to know a person. So it if was one of you friends that did this is would be a-ok? Seems to me like there is a little hate in there, and not saying you have to like him but givin the situation it seems like because "Bill Gates"did it you dont like it.

I find something completely fucked up about the fact that he can change a set law because he has a shitload of cash.

He didn't change the law, he obeyed it. The law doesn't say that you can't drive a certain car here. It says that you can't drive a car that does not meet our smog or safety standards. He paid to have the car crash tested to prove that it meets our requirements and he paid to get the car up to US legal smog specs. The lawyers are just there to handle the paperwork (you need lawyers whenever you deal with the government, trust me on that. I work for the government).

Look at the bright side dude. When you and your band become famous and sell 6 million copies of your debut album, you can buy a 959 and not have to do all that because Bill Gates has already done it for you. :)

People in this thread were quick to judge me based on what I said, why can't I judge him based on what he says? Pssh, I hate the whole "Don't believe the media" crap. Look, I know they aren't the best source but I highly doubt that there is much to twist around tha Bill Gates says. Good god lord in heaven, this is what I mean when I say people play on words..."So it if was one of you friends that did this is would be a-ok?"

I'm sorry, but I can't seem to find the part where I said that. I don't give a shit who or what legalizes driving a 959, That's not the point. The point is, I think Bill Gates is a slimy shit stick. Why are you going to flame on someone because they don't feel the same way as you?

A much more fair statement would be how the media portrays him.

The media can assasinate the character of any person in the world simply by the way they present him in the news. Often, in fact probably the majority of the time, people are villified by the news simply to get ratings.

My only suggestion to you is that you not base your opinions of people (with obvious exceptions like murderers, terrorists and the like) off of what you see in the media. Chances are they're wrong and if you follow, so are you.

Tell you what dude. Let's tone this thing down (after all, we're all frineds here. This isn't ClubSi....) and take a look at why you hate Bill Gates.

Can you give some specific thing that he's done to hurt someone? Or maybe there's some other reason? I just don't see the basis for such strong feelings about why you dislike the man so much. I'm not a fan of his myself, but I don't see any reason to use the strong language like in the quote above about him either.

I just simply find it pitiful that someone with so much money and business could find something so rediculous to nitpick. I also feel the same way about Metallica and their trying to copyright anything that moves.

If anything, I gained just a little teeny tiny bit of respect back for the guy... An I said that I would point it out and say "bad ass", then explain to my wife why I thought so... (she hates it when I do that :) )... Its not like I'm going to follow the guy around, spit shining his Porche emblem everytime he stops...

get a sense of humor...

Oh, and on a side note, one thing you have to understant about Gates is that if you say it can't be done, then he will do it... He used to live in New Mexico, and went to several banks and firms trying to get money for this little project that he called "software"... No one in NM would give him anything, so he left the state... After Microsoft was born, he swore that they would never have any thing to do with NM... that almost caused some serious problems when Intel built their plant in Albuquerque... he didn't want to support a company that was supporting NM... Kinda vindictive, huh?... though, I kinda wish I had a little more of that "go fuck yourself!" attitude myself :)

Hrmm..now this is a pretty interesting topic of discussion here..I know a "LOT" of people, myself included, that have done internships or worked for MS. He makes a habit of hosting a dinner for all of his new interns at his own home, just so he can meet some of the future of his company personally. He is a very, very, smart man..shrewd, but you really cant confuse the nature of the computer business with him not being a nice guy?

You work there in an enviroment that makes you WANT to be there, and have fun while you are working, and fosters creativity. A lot of the people I know that went there got really, stupid, aweful, lame, redundant tasks to do..all the time, day in and day out. Yet, not a single person I know, not ONE, is mad that they took the chance to work for one of the largest companies in the world. Its just plainly awesome to see it working and happening.

I dont really care for some of the "shady" stuff his company has pulled, but at the same time, I'd love to go to work for them... :)

If you are smart enough to make billions of dollars you should be rewarded with the right to be selfish and be applauded while doing it. I applaud Bill Gates for getting what he wanted.

I never said that I hated him because he has alot of money, or because he worked his way to the top, or that he is the creator of MS, or any of that. I said I do not like him because he portrays himself as vindictive asshole towards the state of NM and other people who didn't support his idea because of the type of business at the time. I don't like his image. Period. One reason only. how do they "have the right to be selfish"? Nobody has that right, and nobody should respect self-centered jackasses. Most people who have a lot of money didn't even work for it, and are complete idiots. Gates is nothing more than a really good thief. He stole and cheated his way to the top. If it wasn't for Steve Jobs, there wouldn't even be a Microsoft.

Go ahead and keep telling yourself that. I suppose you invented the internet right? :p

I don't think I have ever seen someone make comments in a thread that has made them self look as stupid as THRICE has just done to himself here.

The only reason weed isn't legal is because of the drug companies. You know, "partnership for a drug free America". There are a million drugs in America right now. Drug companies can dole out Prozac to millions of people to make them feel better but a plant in the ground would hurt their profits.

Hrmm..I hardly think so. Sure, it might be part of it, but I think its an issue of quality control and safety. I'd feel "safe" with some pill that was controlled by the FDA under strict lab conditions, but weed that was grown in the back of someones yard, with their special mix of freaky ass whatever tossed in the mix? No thanks.

Of course, I think thats the whole point of this topic. Control.

Some of the laws that are around these days go a long way to protect us. However, would it honestly hurt anyone if we had Skylines or Silvias roaming the streets? :)

I'm kind of confused. I have followed his work and really admire him as a programmer. I haven't really heard/read anything about the side of him that Thrice is refering too.

I don't think there is any famous person that everyone loves/hates. There are two sides to every fence. However even if you love or hate Gates as a person... you have to at least be thankfull for his contributions. I can guarentee that if it wasn't for him none of us would be on this message board right now. It wouldn't even exist.

hahahahahaha.

Thrice you crack me up.

You keep changing your "reason", then you claim you never said that, someone else changed your wording.

hahahahah. You can't cite examples until someone else does first, then you can quote them.

hahahahahah.

Ok, you hate Bill Gates. Read the article again. He didn't use his wealth to change a law, he used his US given rights to use the law the way it was meant to be used.

The law existed, the car just needed to be certified.

Evo 7's, Skylines, various Jaguars, and now Porsche's are on the list of car's certified. There are other's that I don't really care about too.

And also, Panzer's are legal to drive in the US. :) There are at least 2 in Aurora. Try to pay more attention, instead of jumping on the "I hate Gates" bandwagon. I don't know the guy, I don't have an opinion on him at all, except that it's cool that he likes fast cars.

EDIT : Forget it, I do not feel like carrying on this pointless debate any longer. It doesn't affect my life in any way so why do I care. I'm going to be the mature one here and blow off the stupid comments towards me and drop it. I'd appreciate those who think the opposite to drop it as well.

Weed can be sold in the stores, just like alcohol. Growing your own weed and trying to sell it would be stupid, becaue you can easily just buy it in stores. You dont see people making alcohol and trying to sell it do you? (other than big companies)

I dont like to drive high, I am a paranoid motherfucker when I have to be normal. One time I was really high and riding at like 1 am and I saw a lot of cars with skeletons in them, its weird, you dont see shit when your just high, but I did, it was so scary

mmm... actually, my father-in-law just returned from s.dakota with a mason jar full of "moonshine" that he traded for some produce that he was transporting... pretty good stuff if you like drinking 200 octane... I'm convinced this shit would put my car into low 12's..... the guy was trying to sell it, but settled for a trade :)
