View Full Version : Help with power wire.
I put this in tonight. Sorry for the low quality lighting in these pictures. Anyway, I went onto G2IC.com and read one of the tips about how to re-wire your fog lights to the rear de-froster. So I just wired the power wire to the one it said to do in teg tips, the problem is, the more and more I think of it, I think I just wired to a key hot, rather than a true power source, because the guage doesn't work. So is a key hot different than a power source that is active when you turn the ignition on? If so, anyone know of a common source to tap into? TIA, ~Stu
A third shot. I tried to make it look as clean as possible and put it in a somewhat sleeper location. What do you guys think?

yea you need to hook it up to a source that gives it power when the ignition is turned on.
I think I found one from another thread. I guess since I had that cover off, there is plenty of power right in there from the ignition. The problem is, I don't have a test light, not that I'm lazy or anything.

Do you have a CD player or anything? maybe you can somehow connect it to the remote wire.
No, see that's essentialy what I already did. I have it hooked up to a wire that signals when to turn on, but doesn't really supply any power itself, which is pretty much what you suggested. But thanks for the ideas anyway.

Just connect it to one of the power connections on the ecu, get a test light out and just find one that only has power when the vehicle is turned on

Don't have a test light remember? I'm just going to use a multimeter.

This should help:

there should be an accessory output on the fusebox for that, at least in most hondas there are
Thanks guys. CX: Your document wouldn't open. My multimeter is apparently broken, so I'm going to get a test light as soon as my brother gets his ass out of the tub and takes me.
Okay, I went and got a multimeter that works, and I have it hooked up to a place that has 12 volts (it reads the same as when I test the meter on the battery) but I'm not getting anything. :( I even tested the power wire right before it goes into the back of the guage and it gets power. I also tested that I have a good ground as well.
Do these guages have a fuse that I may have blown? Or might I have fucked it up when I was installing it? Any help here guys?
I've got another idea I'm going to try whilst I wait for replies.
Okay, I figured it out, the guage is getting power, but it's not on or anything, so I think it's just broken.
Anyway, I used a splicer to tap into the O2 sensor, and now the CEL comes on every once and a while, but always goes off when I shut the car off. Tobi told me that since the wire is shielded (similar to coax) that I probably smashed the shield into the main wire and grounded it out. Anyone have any suggestions on:
1) How to fix the current problem, and
2) How I should wire it in the future when I get a new guage that works?
My dad suggested stripping the wire and just peeling back the shield, but I don't know how good of an idea this is in this particular situation. Any takers?
