What do they base they law suits on? And how do they track all of the downloads?

Just a guess, but I bet they are using the "spyware" built into kazaa to track the downloads. I know they are going after people that have more than 1000 downloaded songs so they could be querying the kazaa database for users that meet that criteria. They also seem to be targeting specific artists so they could search for that artist then find out how many songs a user with that artist has downloaded. They would then run a simple tracert on your ip and have your location. These are all just speculation though. I have also heard they have been able to get ahold of some isp records.

ISPs. They see who has a lot of songs. If you have a certain artist and they see you uploading, they get your IP. Then they call your ISP, ask for your info and everything then track you down. I could be totally wrong though

When you use Kazza your Internet adress is viewable to everyone. That's just the way the programs works.
The way RIAA is getting this information is actually very easy. They're getting on Kazaa, doing searches for certain material and then when they find something, do a "view more from the same user" action in the program (that shows everything that the particular user is sharing, and BTW is a very effective way of finding more than you can by searching). If they hit you, and see that you are sharing a lot of files, they make a note of your IP address.
Once they have your IP address, they can find out what ISP you're using. At that point they subpeona your name from your ISP (ISPs keep logs of what customers are issued which IPs). From there, they know who you are.
It really takes zero skill or spyware on your machine to accomplish this.

Dynamic IPs wont help you. ISPs keep a log of who was assigned what IP and when. So all the RIAA has to do is give them your IP and the time that the saw it doing something illegal.

That's what I was going to say. besides that they are likely running the trace on your ip while you are online since they are viewing your info on kazaa.

Looks like it's time to hit the gnutella networks, or something similar. :(

Ive said it before and ill say it again... EVERY program sucked... even napster... the only one that was good was AUDIOGALAXY... but they killed it... AudioGalaxy had every single song ever... and thats not an exaggeration.... they really had all the songs.. they had even ancient persian songs.. my friend found songs form the 50s and those were songs in Spain.. old old songs. i mean it had every single remix... never did i ever not find a song i was looking for on Audio Galaxy... it always had it.. and it was fast... i would select 300 songs and then leave for a day and then all of them were downloaded... it was awesom.. i miss it :(

Hell yeah, audiogalaxy owned. But sometimes the downloads were so slow. But they did have every song, sometimes it took a little bit more searching skill but they had it.

In a way, I think the artists are hurting themselves. By inflicting these lawsuits, it will make them unpopular. No one is going to buy their musec, they want it for free. Music-making comes from the heart, it shouldn't be a way to make a living.

I thought it was the record companies who are doing the actually sueing. I mean, they own the copyrights for the music. My uncle is in the music business, and yes he doesn't like it, but it's not him that sues... it's the record company.
