professors/teachers/bosses assign 'work' that they think is easy but turns out to be a big PITA time sink?

We had 9 days to complete this assignment for my networking class. I'd say i'm pretty much near the top of the class as far as coding expierence/skill goes. I've spent well over 35 hours on this assignment and still probably have another 10 hours or so to go. I've also been working with 3 graduate students (graduate=smart). I wouldn't call any of us alone the smartest kid in the class, but all of us are near the top... and working togeather we have really been spending a lot of time trying to figure everything out. I'm sure if we are taking this much time everyone else is way screwed.

I doubt i'll have it finished tomorrow night when it's due... does this happen to anyone else? The professor even admited it was a 'little' harder than he first thought it would be....

I had a lab like that my sophmore year..it was a freaking 1 credit lab..he told us at the beginning of the class that it would take about 20-30 hours a week outside of class to stay up on the homework. He definately was not kidding either. Once, we had to program all the logic for a coin op vending machine, impliment it..and build it of course. A really easy project sure, but it took prolly 40 hours. The other thing about it, was that we needed it to be 100% functional because he was going to use sections of it on the final exam. I hated that guy..I actually walked out of his class one day because he was being such a dickhead..it was like. "My class is the most important thing you will ever take at this university! I dont care if you have a job, want to have a life, or other classes...."

Um, well since I am still in high school I am going to have to say no, my teachers never do that. At the most I have 4 hours of homework a night. Awww, the joys of being in high school. :)
