View Full Version : Modifying B18B Intake Manifold?

Has anyone ever modified an intake manifold (or know of someone who has) for increased top end torque? I have a spare B18B IM and I need all the torque I can get in the 5000-7000 rpm range before the 21st (without spending much money)...

I'm wondering if there's any restriction in there that I can remove, or if there is anything else I can do to it to increase top end power??? Thanks.

Edit: I also have a spare throttle body that I believe is legal for me to modify as well. But I'm looking for something cheap and preferably DIY.

nothing cheap really, but I know of a few people who have cut it the plenum in half and re-worked all the runners and shit to make it flow better.
problem is the carbie bits cost about $40 each, then you have to have a friend weld it back together.

Why not port the IM to match the head?

 They look like they already match.

put up a intake manifold gasket to the manifold and see if they do. they're might be a little bit you can take off.
i know a lot of scca rules only allow you to portmatch 1" into the manifold though...

Yup, 1" is the limit, iirc. But I think that's on the head side in my case. The Solo II Street Prepared rules say that fuel injection and intake manifolds are unrestricted (which seems to implicitly include the throttle body too), so I'm looking for any cheap improvements I can get. I'm taking it to Second Creek on the 21st, and I'm expecting pretty tough competition in my class.

I have a few other ideas in mind, but it seems like the intake manifold being unrestricted could be a gold mine. I'm not going to shell out $300 for a Skunk2 IM though. I have a spare B18B intake manifold and throttlebody, so I was thinking maybe I could do something with them...

Extrude Hone, but not something you can get done quickly or inexpensively.

I've seen used Skunk2 IMs for around $200.

if you can weld you could make one ther is a page out thats shows how

machine the inlet to match a bigger TB? but a TB isn't necessarily cheap... If you don't end up using that manifold, lemme know.
