I'll be making my first passes since 2002. Hoping for mid 13's or better.

So far the weather looks like it will be clear according to the Weather Channel website.

I'll be in a white '91 MR2 with white wheels and a Greddy banner on the windshield, if anyone wants to introduce themselves. I'm a newbie on HAI so I don't know any of you . . .

I'm seriously considering going, just to get used to launching with the Quaife diff. I used to have a Phantom Grip, but this Quaife is incredibly different.

Interesting . . . what's the difference? I have a Quaiffe in my CRX, it seemed to add to torque steer out of corners, but otherwise I didn't feel much difference in a straight line.

You should go Chris. Im going to try out a set of slicks. Maybe get some decent 60s this time.

I'll be up there for sure. I'll probably just pit near you, since I don't think there will be any other neon guys there. Are they new slicks Tobi? I've found it takes a few runs/burnouts to break in new slicks.

hsunchen, how much power are you making? Straight line wise, the Quaife helps a lot, but not if you aren't already spinning.

There is definitely an increase in torque steer, but its manageable. It's strange though, taking a corner, now as boost comes up, it pulls me hard to the inside. Before, I had to feather the throttle and stay out of boost all the way through corners, or the car just spun the inside tire, and plowed straight ahead.

I still spin with the Quaife, but not as bad as before. No more third gear chirping, no more spinning second gear to redline. I still spin in first gear all the way to redline, and now when I shift to second, it just spins for a few feet. This is referring to powershifting on 17" street tires.

Hopefully with the Quaife, I can drop my 60's to 1.65-1.67'. I was pulling 1.71-1.73's with the Phantom Grip. We'll see.

If you're referring to the CRX that has the Quaiffe, prob. less than 100 whp - it was a CSP autocross car. That's prob. why I didn't feel much different. It's currently being built into a D16 minime that I'll run occasionally in SM2 - it might make 135 HP at the wheels.

You used to run a blue Neon with an American flag graphic inside the rear window right?

If you meant the MR2T, I don't know - but it dynoed at right about 300 whp 2 years ago at Dyno-pro, and it feels a little better now - I'd guess around 330 whp.

I will be there too. I think my car is now a low 14 second car now. I am running well but missing top end power. I have been staying away from the track because I needed to replace my transmission. Need practice.

"ARGH", as in I would have been better off not going. Everyone's car was running crappy (Barometer was 23"), there was rain, and it was very crowded. My first run was a 17.1 @ 81 mph, with a 2.5 sec 60 foot (ie bad launch killed the run). Then between the crowd and the rain, I waited 2 hours for my second run, which I hosed completely... spun the tires all the way through 1st, tires gripped as soon as I went to 2nd, at which point I ended up at 2000 rpm, so you could say that I basically started in 2nd gear and got tripped the timers early. So, I ended up with a 3 second 60 foot time and an 18.6 @ 80 mph. I'm kind of surprised it wasn't much higher, considering what happened.

By that time it was 8:15pm, and I was already 2 hours late for work, so I left all pissed off and disappointed because I just wanted to see what the car would do. I had expected a high 15. Hsun said he'd kiss my feet if I did a low 16, and I thought that would be happening, but sadly it didn't. $30 for only two runs, and one of them was so absoutely horrible that I couldn't even call it a run. The 17.1 run was embarrassing enough!

Oh, plus I drove in the pouring rain and heavy traffic (with many idiots) for an hour and a half to get there, so I was frustrated to begin with.

So, ARGH! :(

They are DSS stage 2 axles. THey shouldnt have broken.

Mark williams still makes the best import axle setup but Im not willing to pay the $5k for an unbreakable driveline....yet.

I ran as well as ever. no nitrous. 13.5, 13,4, 13.3, 13.3. Nice cool weather, but there was a big headwind and the atmospheric pressure was about a pound off. Sorry about your car Tobi

hsunchen
08-28-2003, 12:13 PM
Yeah, Tobi, it's always disappointing when you don't achieve what you're expecting - I understand that this setback might make you miss the next import event as well.

If it's any consolation, I was offering to sell people my car in the lanes as well. I think I was even talking about buying a Mustang (there was clean looking yellow one with black wheels running nitrous in the 12's - just on Nitto 555R's too).

I even had a 15.56 pass - I think that's a record of slowest EVER for TD06-powered MR2!

I got 5 passes, all of which demonstrated my incredible ability to consistently bog my launches to the tune of 2.24-2.6 second 60-fts.

I did finally manage to break into the 13's (only once), even if it was only a 13.77.

But the trap speed was very encouraging - 107.1 mph. The car was pulling very well in 3rd and 4th. I'm thinking my next dyno may be in the mid-300's.

I followed it up with a 14.17 bog-launch run, which unfortunately was against an new blue EVO 8 with only intake and exhaust that I REALLY, REALLY wanted to chase down after the given-holeshot advantage and beat.

But I lost b/c of my 2.39 60-ft, and I couldn't catch him - he ran a 1.9 60 ft, 13.828 @ 99.46 to my 14.179 @ 106.09.

My friend caught it on video too - would have made my night if I'd managed to edge him at the end of the 1/4 AND had it on tape. . .

Weston, I'm truly sorry you had a bad time, and I'm glad you came out anyway, but I must point out -

1) It's always busy at test and tune. You're shooting yourself in the foot to not show up at 4:30 (or earlier) and not be able to stay til the end.

2) Your times are what they are. Don't blame it on the weather. The conditions are variable and do affect your times, but it can't make a car run 15% slower just because the humidity is high or whatever. It was very cool towards 9 pm last night, in the high 60's I think, which is damn good for making power (in August).

Not really, but it has changed my opinion about Bandimere somewhat... I remember some people here saying that they switched from autocross to 1/4 mile stuff because SCCA autocrosses are so crowded and they were sick of waiting around all day for 3-4 runs. But it seems like Bandimere is worse. Last night sure was, and I went there a year ago and I was standing around in the 100F weather all day for 4 runs.

So, I think I'll stick with autocross... My car is setup for it, I get a lot more time, and it's much more fun for me. The way I figure it is 4 runs @ 17 seconds (which is slow!) = 68 seconds, 3-4 autocross runs @ 60-90 seconds = 180-360 seconds. I'd have to get 10 or 11 runs at Bandimere to get as much seat time as 3 runs on a short (~60 second) autocross course. Or around 22 Bandimere runs for 4 runs on a long autocross course. Autocross costs me $25 (for SCCA members), vs $30 for Bandimere. Now if I could just get 10 runs for $30 at Bandimere, I'd be all over it, but I had trouble just getting 2 last night.

To each his own, but I'm just saying that I don't understand the argument about getting more for your time and money at Bandimere.

Weston I consistently could not break into the 16's for whatever reason (actually, it was my consistently horrible 60ft times 2.5's and 2.6's) but then in the first round of the ast club clash, the temperature dropped or something, and everyone was breaking out. I lowered my dial in to a 17.15 and broke out with a 16.98 or something on the breaks. So that is my current best time.

Yeah, I was shooting for 4:30, but heavy rain and lots of unexpected traffic added about an hour.

And I still believe that I could get low 16's / high 15's with good conditions (if I launch it well).

Didn't even realise it was you. That sucks that you bogged your launch, I was expecting to get smoked. Any chance I could get a copy of the run you got on tape? It's my first 13 :)

Weston,

Sorry that it sucked for you, I think next year when you come out, come on a Friday Night ET series. You are automatically going to get 2 runs, plus how many rounds you win. Don't worry about losing either, Stu went 3 rounds in his first race (5 runs) and has been doing consistently better. There is only 30 people max in our class on fridays.

Just food for thought.
