Ninja 500R, MSF course. If not that route, Honda Nighthawk 250 and lots and lots and lots of practice for a year so he can actually handle a turn or two. Oh and FULL gear. No more of this "Damn, my oakleys blew off, where did my flip flops go? Aww hell, this tank is chafing my bare leg too much for me to care about the little shit" Attitude. I swear one more biker talks shit about me being in full gear I'll strangle him.

what about the Yamaha YZF-R6? Think he could use that he is a little guy at like 5'7 120 lbs and yes he will be getting full gear.

Does your little friend want to make it hard on himself????? Sportbikes are not the best/easiest bikes to learn on.....................and a majority of 17 year olds don't have the maturity to ride a sport bike competently. Get something smaller and less expensive.

I agree, start on a EX500, EX250 or something like that.
They are still sportbikes but not nearly as powerfull.
Just because it is only 600cc's does not mean crap. A lot of pro racers in the AMA would have a chuckle at the whole "600's are girls bikes" hehe I personally will prolly never go above a 600. I am actually contimplating on selling my 600 and going for 250GP for racing next year. Not sure yet.
I rode a 250 for two years then went to a 750 magna for a few more before I decided it was time for a sportbike.
:)
He has his whole life in front of him. Tell him to learn to ride first, with the help of the MSF course.
Then learn to ride the slow bike fast. Then he can learn how to ride a fast bike fast. Then he can come out to the track and play :D
