View Full Version : Anyone interested in a detail day?

Here's what i'm thinking... it seems like a few guys (girls?) here are starting to want to care for their car a little more than driving it through the auto-wash once a month.

I'm thinking maybe we should have a day (probably a saturday 2-3 weeks or so) where we can get togeather somewhere and go over all the basics. Maybe use someones (perhaps 2 people if we get enough interest) car as a demo and go over everything from washing, to claying, to buffing, to waxing. I could bring all my stuff including the buffer and show people how to do it. Rather than just reading about it online and trying it you could do it hands on with me there to ask whatever questions you want. If I don't have the answer I'll have 2-3 of my friends on call so i can ask them.

I think it'd be a good way to get a lot of people more informed on the process. Would anyone here be interested?

Could maybe even get Nick to show up with some stuff and a few samples for people to try.

detailing yes, PDR no... I think Jai SI is the one to talk to for that.

Yea, I can't do much to remove the dents... but I sure can make it so shiny that they are way more noticible :D

That'd be the plan... but i don't want to be up on some chalk board with a bunch of diagrams or something. It'd be a total hands on sort of thing. ie i show how to buff a panel using a light polish, then everyone gets to try. The good thing is that you can ask the questions while your trying so you can be sure to leave with some more knowledge.

Ideally it would be some place with a garage that could fit at least too cars, and maybe a nice area for a bbq or something....

I have a huge ass garage, can fit 4-5 Honda's:) but it's in Loveland unfortunately.

Sounds like a fun idea.
Do we bring our own supplies that we have used or do you recommend us going and getting all the stuff you will bring with you?

LeonZ

fuckin A. how about we do a barbecue also.

I have more than enough suplies here, but if people wanted to try some stuff than we could. Or maybe if there's product you think you are using wrong or something you could bring it.

I could also focus more on specific product lines. I know there would be quite a few people interested if I did a Zaino tutorial.

If people want to try stuff then maybe buy it if they like it, i'm sure we could get Nick from detailersparadise.com there.

Yeah, Zaino is some good shit, it worked wonders on my ITR. Can't wait to hit it again soon.

I'm up in Michigan this weekend, so it would have to be maybe the first or second weekend in Augest.

Sounds like we can get a pretty good turnout

Hopefully the weather will kind of cool down to make it more comfortable.

Quick question for ya Dr. I was told (can't believe everything you hear) that the "wet and black" you put on your tires to make them look newer actually destroys them and can make them ... explode, pop etc. Is that true?

I've never heard of them causing tires to pop or explode... but some of the tire dressings can actually cause the tires to turn brown faster. Tires aren't black when they are made, something is added to them to make them black. Whatever it is that they use doesn't like UV, when UV hits them they turn brown. I think tires have some kind of coating that protects against the UV, so my guess is that some dressings weaken that protective coat and cause them to turn brown faster than they normally would. It's also why even if you don't normally use a tire dressing because you don't like the wet, shiny, black look, it's still a good idea to put something like 303 Aerospace protectant on them to protect them from the sun.

BoostAngel
07-21-2003, 04:16 PM
Oh wow ... I am going to have to try the 303 Aerospace protectant.
So once they turn brown there is no way to get them black again?!?

Thank you for the information Dr.

DrJones

some stuff will make brown tires look much better... but none of them last. What happens is the tire starts spining (they tend to do that) the centripital force builds up and it literally slings the product off. Just glob a bunch of tire dressing on your tires and go on a little drive without buffing it. You'll see what i mean.

As for turning brown ones black... here's some I did:

of course they didn't stay looking like that for more than 2-3 weeks. But, you can make them better.

You can get 303 from detailersparadise.com (he's local so you can get it direct without shipping, he also has a little tire applicator pad thing that I like) or from camping world stores.

two other quick things as long as i'm on it... the gels last much longer than the sprays, and cleaning them with a general purpose cleaner before dressing is very important and can help a lot

Wow those look amazing !! 2-3 weeks is good in my book, I usually couldn't get them to stay looking like that for more then 2-3 days! It sounds like that is one of my problems is I was using the spray not the gel!
It looks like you work on the tires before doing the whole car, is there a reason for that?

Thanks for the tips ...

Actually on that exploder I didn't even bother washing the car. I saw the tires and just wanted to see how good I can get them, didn't care much about the rest. I usually wash the tires & rims while i do the car just to make things easy. Then I dress them while waiting for a coat of wax to cure or something.

One step that is good to take first is to dress the trim before you wax and wash. Trim dressing is always really nasty and messy stuff.. doing it first keeps it from causing problems. Plus if you are using products that stain trim, dressing the trim first usually protects it, so even if you slip up and get wax on your trim it won't stain.

As for where... i'm not sure yet. Some place with lots of room.. maybe Tobi's if he wouldn't mind. My guess is he'd let us if we brought him some food and beer. :D Maybe we could use Project SI as one of the demo cars....

DrJones: I'll get some pictures of my car posted up soon..been a little busy man..I'm sure you understand why. :( However, even if my car isnt fixed yet..I'd be down to learn some more stuff...wish I could get my friends Del Sol to you while its here..its not quite as bad as I thought, but definately beyond the products I have.

However, when I spun out yesterday..my car was COVERED with dust..and it really only stuck to the passenger side. Weird eh? Could be because of the direction of the spin..but all the dust that got on the other side..was GONE! It looks flawless...good stuff you used. :)

I think Nick is opening his store front sometime soon. Maybe we can get a few cars there for the opening and a detail session.

The S2000 really needs a clay bar bad. We can use my car as a demp car, Nick was telling me of a new product that he wanted me to try out.

Sorry I'm so late to this thread. I would gladly be part of a detail day. Why don't you guys hit my site and see if there is anything you would like to try. I can bring samples and that jazz. It should be fun. I can also bring my PC so there isn't a line for the Dr.'s.

Simon, it looks like we are going to wait until the Spring to open the store front. By the time we got things cookin' it would be fall and it would be my doom to open a store without some summer left.

Don't make it on August 16th, that's my birthday. I'll probably be trashed and give POOR advice. "Yeah, if that waxy stuff ain't comin off just get that 1,000 grit sandpaper and that'll get it right off, now move so I can finish spraypainting your damn tires"

im open for both, I think most will say Sunday due to work.

if you want a car to work on, you can use my car

I don't ever wash my beater/daily drivers. I just wait for rain or a broken sprinkler head to spray in the air. :D
