I remember just a couple years ago a bunch of RWD guys were saying there was no way a FWD would run 8s;now would 6s be out of the question.

I thought an SRT-4 was a Neon. Is that what that is? Looks like some sort of a funny car...
Anyway, damn fast, and very impressive for FWD. What the hell kind of motor is he running in that for 1200hp?

oops I forgot to post on SRT4 where it will make the most sense. Duh.
If it don't make dollars, then it don't make sense.

I was wondering that too, what motor did they put in the SRT4??? I dont think they made an entirely new engine did they? And i respect the SRT4 for being a pretty sweet car for its price. (And since they warranty the engine if you use mopar upgrades)
I think this is cool because the SRT-4 has been out for about what? 6, maybe 7 seconds compared to all the other cars that people are using?

Shaun Carlson has serious insider connections. The Mopar guys are using automatic transmissions too and that puts them miles ahead of the shifter Hondas.
The SRT-4 uses a 2.4 liter version of the Neon DOHC motor and puts down pretty serious power to begin with. He's probably got a turbo the size of a house and a big bottle o' nitrous in the back to make 1200 HP.

For all the doubters out there who didnt believe those of us who said the SRT4 is underrated, heres some proof. A guy came to redline yesterday in his SRT4 with just a K&N filter, and put down 238whp and 271lb/ft torque. And they are rated at 215hp and 245lb/ft torque.

I guess thats because we give more attention to our Neons then being a post whore. :p
Really, though, Shaun Carlson is doing a great thing for all FWD cars. Pushing for the 7 sec limit is outstanding. As for his engine its the factory block, head, and crank. Other then that the engine was "built" by Darrel Cox Racing, it has a tube chassis and a complete body made of carbon fibre.

Mmmmm....BIG turbo!

Leave it to a n00b from out of state to rehash a 2 month old thread.
All the colorado guys know Neon's rock anyways, I school their asses all the time. :D :guns: ;)

I know they are faster than what the local owners can do at the strip. I keep seeing them bog at the strip, but people tell me that they smoke the tires through first and second during test drives. Must be the traction at the strip.

Since the engine is infron of the axles, wouldnt that make it a Front engine Mid Front wheel drive - FM?
It would make sense, its just the oppisite of a 911 layout.

No joke.
I've seen one guy go 14.4@97 stock. One guy claimed to have gone 14.6, but I haven't seen anyone else running quicker than 15's.
Still though, 97 mph is a ton for a stock neon.

you may not like them but srt-4s are damn quick for a sub-20k dollar car.

That's a bad comparision.
A neon is similar to old school Charger's/Cuda's. The SRT4 is obviously the Hemi Cuda or Charger.
The civic is either a 60's Camaro or Mustang. The accord? A Chevy Biscayne or Ford Limited. :)
I'll admit though, the "Hi" advertising campaign was kinda dumb. The lesser known "Bye" campaign for the race prepped neon's was a cool play on the original ad though.
In reality, who cares. A fast car is a fast car. I think an Accord is a horrible car to modify, but if you like it, and you can make it fast, more power to you.

I am not sure how you can compare a neon to a hemi-cuda or even a charger. Yeah they might be Mopar vehicles but that doesn't mean that the neon is todays hemi-cuda.
anyways...i don't like neons...some people don't like accords. we all have our opinions and that is what makes us different. otherwise we would all drive the same car.
i'm done.

You're half-right, but they're both factory hot rods. The SRT-4 is THE Mopar performance car right now. We won't even consider the viper, simply due to its' price.
I see a lot of similarities between old school muscle cars and the newer ones like the SRT-4. Too much power, crappy handling, fairly low initial cost, and cheap to modify.
In fact, I would bet most SRT-4's would be able to beat a stock Cuda or Charger. You have to remember that most of those '60's muscle cars were not really THAT fast by today's standards. (un-modified, that is.)

It all depends on what your definition of fast is. Having grown up in that era, I know from first hand experience that there were several cars of that period that properly setup would keep most of the off the lot cars of today honest. Many of the hotrods we built would dust 90% of the cars people think are hot today. I had a low 12 second car that I drove to college in 1968.
By properly set up I mean decent tires (which was the major challange of the period) and about $80 in 1960's dollars for some traction bars or helper springs/air shocks.
For example the first car to break into the 11's was a 1962 Plymouth (Melrose Missle) on July 15, 1962 Tom Grove ran a 11.93 @118.57 in a production stock passnger car with factory option engine. It was the little respected 413 mopar. Super Stock engine.
In 1963 you could order a 426 ramcharger engine and aluminum front end sheet metal, with aluminum front bumper. Although the 1964 GTO was the image car of the muscle car era the 413 superstock dodge would eat its lunch. The 1968 Super Stock Hemi Cuda's ran 10 second ets at 130 mph.
I had a friend that ran a 426 here in Denver that ran mid 11's @ 135 mph (circa 1973 cars name was Sunday Punch). He was making so much power he only ran the car about 2 years as he was breaking up the unibody in the rear from the launch forces.
The 426 Hemi charger ran 14.2 second ET's off the show room floor which would be very comparable with the SRT-4 and the WRX to name two cars that have similar stock performance.
Granted they handled like pigs, but that was not a big issue until the Transam race series became popular and the AC cobra, and the GT 40 demonstrated America could build world class sports cars if they wanted to.
Don't under estimate the old iron, some of it was wicked fast.
