Melissa and I just got a 20 gallon tank not long ago and just got it set up and running. Me naturally wanted to learn more about it. In just a little bit of time I came to relize that there is alot of things into taking care of fish and the tank. It's kinda how alot of "newbies" join our forum and know very little about their cars.

Their "Fast and the Furious" is "Finding Nemo". Kinda funny when I read a few threads on it, same idea, different topic. I think I might have found another new hobby and I love learning about natural science. There are some crazy amounts of cash being dumped into some of these setups.

Here are a few sites that I have found so far just by searching on the subject.

That Reef Tank is Beautiful.

What kind of fish did you get to go in your tank futuresi? Fresh water or Salt water?
I want to do salt water because I love all the varities of fish you can do but talking to some people that set them up says it could take months just to get the water right. :( One of these days though.
I had a tank that had Pictus Catfish in it...

It's just a freshwater tank right now. I'm just beginning to learn alot more about all kinda of setups. I wanna try to have nothing but real plants in the tank as well. Right now I have a couple balla sharks, 2 tetras, 1 alage eater, and a zebra fish. Don't know their correct names but you get the idea ;)

I like this plant setup

Awesome! The plant tank looks good ...
Good Luck on your progress with the tank. There is so much to learn it seems: different types of fish, their temprament so they can go with other fish, how many fish you can have due to the size of your tank (which I never understood nor obeyed, I just wanted to stuff as many fish in the tank as I could get :p)

Have Fun :D

I have an unheated 20 gallon tank with a single large goldfish in it. I change half the water every 6 months, whether it needs it or not, and feed the dude 3-4 times a week. Does that count?

I have a 5 gallon tank going for about 6 months now. I have 2 kinds of live plants, they aren't exactly good looking plants but the are maintance free and the fish like to nibble on them.

I've had a few babies that i feed to my betta. She is not a very good hunter though. She is "all show, no go"

And last but definately not least. It's my favorite!!! My pirhana tanks. The small tank has 3 smaller ones that never grew up. The 5 in the larger tank are starting to eat feeders. But they love red meet. :)

Two fish tanks - one is a 39 gallon one with only algae eater right now (still stabalizing the tank). 2nd one is a ... wanna say a 2 gallon tank. It has 2 neon tetras and an algae eater. Yes, I am not a huge fish fan - but I love brightly color fish. :)

Heck yeah, you definitely need a digi camera. Your tank sounds awesome! I love the dog face puffers.
Did it take you along time to get the tank stabilized? What all did you have to do?

Gim: Your poor fish!

Ashley: I guess you'd have to see the movie to understand what you are talking about huh?

naw, i'll post pics of our KOI later and show you what huge is ;). Some of thenm are 20-30 years old.

I've got a 40 gallon tank with a few fish in it right now. It's freshwater, but I would love to try salt water again. We also have a several thousand gallon koi pond in the back yard though.

You know the animal to live the longest ever recorded was a Japanese Koi, it went through five generations in some Japanese family's pond. It lived 220 some years!!!! I bet there is a sea turtle out there that lived longer though.

I have a 60-gallon hex and 70-gallon regular, both salt-water, but in storage until I move into my house. Saltwater is a BIG pain in the ass and I don't recommend it for beginners. I can't wait to get mine going again! I'm going to try to breed a pair of Clown Anemone's this time in the 60-gallon, and setup a nice live-rock reef in the 70-gallon. Should be interesting. Too bad it's such an expensive hobby (like cars!) Haha.

Yea, keeping an exotic tank is basically an everday commitment.....the tank went from salt to fresh and back to salt water...each time you break in a tank is sorta different...checking all the levels and making it stable happens eventually....i didnt have to worry though becuase i had damsils live rock and a few coral in it for almost a year before i decided to make it nicer. buy cheap fish and stuff that shits in the tank to get the water in a normal condition....they have liquids that stabalize a tank faster, or you can just wait.....if a fish gets infected or dies suddenly its probably goodto start over ....clear out at least 80% of the water and refill.....You dont want a diseas, virus, or infection type thing to destroy the homeostasis in a tank...check the fishes eyes for infection cause that is one of the most common spots to see symptoms....if the fish seem to live fine and the PH level is good...you find fish that can coexsist and are comfortable at the tanks temperature....everythign shoudl work out.

Theres a product called proper ph which is good for fresh water tanks, either 7.0 or 8.3 for cichlids. It works great... so great in fact that once your tank really gets going, you never really have to adjust the ph ever again, even when adding tap water provided you throw in a couple of pumps of conditioner in your tap water tank refills.

I also hear that it is easier to get a large salt water tank going than a small one. Probably a good idea to start out with some live coral and rock to get things going then add inexpensive fish.

I tried salt water once a while back, but didn't have the cash to do it properly.

the bigger the tank the more room for error with both fresh and salt.

I have a 40g with 2 angels that I'm breeding, one 10g with 6 silver mollies and a betta, and a 2g with only a betta. I've been keeping fish for about 5 yrs. The best advice I can give a new fish-head is "don't be upset when they die, and they're going to die, a lot, just flush it and get a new one." Until you've been doing it a while and learn to recognize their problems and how to adjust the water and treat them you're gonna kill a lot of fish, don't worry about it....btw, it's worth it

I have 2 55 gallon tanks. In one I have a baracuda, dragon fish, and a butterfly koi. In the other I've got balas, angels, many different catfish, and a fish that barks. If you are going to put real plants in your tank be careful! If they do not get the right amount of light they change funky colors....We also use to have a silver and a black arrawana.

Kwando-

Arownana can be quite hard to raise. Young ones need alot of time and maintenance. The best thing is to usually buy them 6 - 9 months old and have plenty of moving water. Ill try to borrow my gf's camera and get a pic, but good luck if you decide to start another one.

Kwando: It looks like your orange koi just runs into the side of your tank. it's swimming horizontal and then the nose is against the side of the glass and the tail end is goes up.

maybe it's just me and i'm easily amused
