Bottom of the B18B. I removed the rod caps for #4 (far right) and #2 (not visible).

This is the #4 rod cap on the left, and #2 on the right. #4 looks good, but where did part of #2 and it's bearing go?

Oh, here it is! Shit!

The header didn't have anything to do with it, and I didn't over-rev either... It was just a freak problem with the #2 bearing, and I have reason to believe it was defective from the start. All of the other bearings and everything else are in excellent shape. There's a lot of precision in there, so a seemingly small defect or mistake when assembling the engine can cause problems in the long run. It's well designed oil system is what kept it together for as long as it did.

It was about 10-20 miles away from hitting 103k, and 70k of them are from me beating the shit out of it, so I can't complain. It also gave me about two weeks of warning signs, which I mistook as something else. Had I known what it really was, it would have been a $20 repair. And it did take me racing on it, then beating the shit out of it on the way there and back before it blew up. It was race #7 in the series, I took 7th place in my class of 26, and 7 out of 70 novices; with all of those 7's, I thought it'd be my lucky day.

But like I said, everything else is in good shape, so I can fix it... I just need one new connecting rod & cap, and then to get the crank machined (it tore up #2 a little) and get new bearings. I'll throw some new rings on it while I got it apart; probably a good idea to do the clutch too. The only problem is finding affordable machine work for the crank...
