View Full Version : How much is this worth (90 Prelude Si)?

Anyone want to give their opinions on this car's current value and what it will be worth when fixed?

Pics here (http://www.vMac.org/~weston/lude/)

It's a 1990 Prelude Si 5-speed with 130k miles (engine sounds perfect), but it is wrecked and has a salvage title... The passenger's side quarter panel is dented in, and the door is smashed (and window broken), but it didn't mess anything else up so I can just bolt on a new door. The rear right wheel is a spare at the moment too.

Put it on ebay!

Is that yours? Anyways, 3rd gens will typically go for around $3,000... give or take a grand depending on final condition.

Yeah, I just bought it from Klode's for $500 this morning. It looks like I can get it fixed and legal pretty cheaply. I just need to find a door, then I have ways (and connections) for pulling the quarter panel dent out. It'd make a damn nice beater, but I need to make more money rather than spend it, so I'll probably sell it once I fix my Integra.

Your beater is my car... heh. :( What did you do to your engine?

I had a defective bearing on my Integra, so I just need to machine the crank, get new bearings, one new rod, and it'd be a good idea to do new rings and a head gasket then too.

It looks like the Prelude will be a pretty nice beater... I went there with the intention of getting a cheap Civic for a beater or a 2nd gen Integra for it's block (a b18a block is the same as a b18b), but the Teg's engine sounded messed up, and all the Civics were messed up and way more than I was going to spend.

Then the Prelude came along and I got real lucky and no one who knew much about it was around. It looks worse than it is too. It took some effort, but we got the passenger's door open and found that it should be a simple matter of replacing the door and fixing the quarter panel. I got it for $500 and my friend who was there with me was like "man, you just stole that car".

It also has the B20A5 engine, which is in good shape (only 130k miles too) and I could probably put the block in the Teg if I were in a bind (ie if my crank is out of spec now). I know everyone says the B20A5 engines are crap and have a bad R/S ratio, but everything I've seen and heard is that they run strong for a long long time. I know a guy who had one still running great at 250k miles and it only died because the cheap AutoZone timing belt snapped. And I was just reading another forum where a guy had 375k on his.

The only problem with putting it in my Teg is that it's taller than all of the other B-series engines (including the B20B and Z). So, that means exhaust header clearance issues and maybe other things too. Apparently it mounts a bit tilted too, but I don't think that's a big deal. The 2.0 liters is accomplished with a longer stroke on an 81mm bore (same as B18), rather than a B20B or Z which has an 83mm bore and the same stroke as the LS. That means the B20A5 should be stronger since it has thicker walls, but there's more sideloading too (although I've never heard of it causing an actual problem; it's just not a good motor to make rev to 11000 rpm). I'm kind of wondering what would happen if I put my LS head and ECU on it...

Edit: according to this calculator (http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/compcalc/compcalc.php), a b20a5 block (81 bore, 95 stroke) + b18a/b head + LS pistons = 1958cc and 9.75 compression. :D

Thanks for expressing your ignorance, but when I ask a question, I'm asking everyone except for you.

Just be careful when you drive it, they have been known to tear holes in the space-time continoum and can pull 3 lat. G's on the skidpad STOCK!. Any honda dealer would probobly trade you strait up for a S2000, they would be stupid if they didnt, those 1990 SI's are CLASSICS!

doesnt look like its all that bad. it should be good to get you around for a while. You might be able to sell it for $1K when you get it fixed with the salvage title but that's more than you paid for it right?

yeah seen that car at klodies, you sure it didnt get into the b pillar? anyways if you got a conect to fix that quarter panel, then it could be worth it , what are they going to consider as fixed for you to get a title on that car? when you show proof of repairing the car, do the expect you to put a complete quarter on it? anyways projects are always fun, enjoy

It didn't look like any of the pillars on the car got bent. :)

I'm thinking I can replace the door (and get a receipt), then just fix the quarter panel with my friend. I suppose I could have my friend write me a receipt if needed, but I wouldn't think the State Patrol would care about that too much. I don't think the quarter panel being dented would be a big deal, but I guess it all depends on the cop that inspects it. This friend of mine has been through the whole process before, and he said some are real picky and some aren't.

Yea, the b20a5's aren't bad... they will last a really long time too.

And yea, the b20a5's are tilted back a few degrees.

Great beater if you can fix it.
