ok this stupid rattling noise that my exhaust makes is really bugging me and only getting worse. my friend thinks that the ceramic in my cat is broken and slipping back and blocking of my exhaust, i kinda agree with him cause i loose alot of power goin up hill. i thought it was just the heat shield on the cat might be loose, but i wrenched on it pretty good, and nothing was loose. so what i wanted to do was take off my cat, and knock all that ceramic out of there, that way i have a nice clean shot all the way through my exhaust(yes i know i wont pass smog). the problem is, there is no flange joining the cat the the rest of the exhaust system. i dont want to have to cut pipe and be doing welding. but i will if it would be worth it.
or since i would be doing welding any way, should i just go down to an auto store and buy some 2 1/2 " exhaust pipe and weld myslef a new exhaust?
or the most expensive, take it to a muffler shop

Maybe there's a hole in the muffler or something that's leading to the stuff inside rusting apart from each other. Happened on my friends car and that was the problem.

if you have an HF, it's not the cat.
the hf's have the cat "in" the header so to speak.
my STD model was the same way and had the same problem, all it was was a pre-muff that had rotted out. we cut that part out and just welded in some cheap ass pipe from napa.
that was over 3 years ago and it was still running fine till the day i gave it away.

if the cat is up in the header, then what the fuck is that ratling noise coming from the middle of my exhaust? right where a large bulge in the piping is?

should be a stock resonator, that's how my STD model was.
your manifold does look like this, correct?
hf/std/vx manifolds (http://www.homemadeturbo.com/tech_projects/HF_manifold/index.html)
*edit* that would be the manifold itself, or the top part.
the cat is bolted to that and heads down to the exhaust...

just cut the cat off and weld a a pipe on, or go to your local junk yard, they might cut you off a used cat off a car. the only thing about cutting the cat off is that it might make it louder.

Don't expect a muffler shop to work on it. It's illegal for them to work on an altered exhaust, or to alter it from stock.

If that's the case every muffler shop is doing illegal work.

THe mid section of the exhaust is a pipe within a pipe. double wall exhaust so on, so forth. My Civic did the same thing. You need a new mid pipe.

a pipe within a pipe? what the hell is that good for? and yes that is exactly what my manifold looks like.
i think i might look around the junk yards for an old manifold that i can modify with just a straight pipe, then when i need to i can change back my old manifold and exhaust.
hey dustin, should i just cut off that mid section double wall thing and replace it with a straight pipe? or is there some function that requires that double wall thing. the noise is bugging the hell outa me.

if you want to make your car "cat-less", or illegal, you can swap over a dx header, or any aftermarket d series header. but that removes the cat from your system so....
kind of like i said in my first post ;) you can just cut that part out, and re-weld in some other pipe.

would the dx header help free up some HP? cause im sure i could find one at the local junk yard. what else would i need if i was to swap out for the dx header? such as a larger diameter exhaust piping? or would the 1 1/2 piping i have now work?

you might see a little gain, i don't think it would be worth making your car illegal though.
pretty much what you would be doing is removing the cat from you exhaust system, which might free up some power, but at the same time, your car probably won't pass emissions.
But everything should bolt right up. I did it on my red car (because the stock cat had gone bad and was making the car smell like shit) and everything bolted right up.
You could always just swap the stock manifold back on when you went to get emissions though also...

ok i wnet to the junk yard today, and the guy there told me he could order me a 88-91 CRX DX exhaust manifold for about $100. but he said according to the computer the manifold wouldnt fit. i really dont want to do any cutting and welding. what DX were you talking about when you said to swap it over, CRX DX or civic DX?

hey man, don't waste $100 on a dx manifold. your not going to see that big of a change. just keep looking in junkyards till you find one for like $10. I might even have one in the garage.
as far as it not fitting, d series is d series, they'll all swap over, just like the b series.

if you have one how much would you want for it? it is off a '88-'91 right? just making sure you know. so like i said, how much do you want for it?
